Brief review below given a less-than-ideal review environment:
BOTTLE: 1 pint 16 fl oz [sic]. White unbranded pry-off crown cap. Brown glass. Fun label art.
Reviewed live as a "Belgian stout aged in oak barrels on vanilla beans" per the label. Expectations are above average given the brewery. Served cold into a tulip and allowed to come to temperature over the course of consumption.
No bubble show forms as it's poured.
HEAD: About 2cm. Khaki colour. Nice creaminess and frothiness, with a good complexion and consistency. Retention is average - about 2 minutes. Leaves a light coating of lacing as it recedes.
BODY: Opaque solid black. No yeast is visible within.
Appears well-carbonated. It's a nice albeit typical appearance for a beer of its style.
AROMA: Light and muted. Faint vanilla, dark malt sweetness, cream, a hint of oak. Quite reticent.
TASTE: Vanilla bean dominates, with a dark malt/chocolate malt base and some nicely attenuated yeast (though Belgian or American, it's impossible to distinguish). Not too sweet, but unfortunately there's no roasted barley or coffee presence to balance it out. I find a kiss of cacao nibs as it comes to temperature, but overall it's quite simple and shallow for a barrel aged stout of any variety.
The oak barrel never really comes through, and I have to question how long this was actually barrel aged. Depth of flavour is merely average. Flavour duration and intensity are average.
TEXTURE: Smooth, wet, somewhat creamy, medium-bodied, overcarbonated, and unrefreshing. Has moderate weight and presence on the palate.
This mouthfeel doesn't elevate the beer and there's no harmony of texture and taste, but it's decently executed, with no obvious flaws.
OVERALL: A no-frills barrel aged stout with insufficient intricacy and subtlety, Monk's Trinity will fail to impress the discerning drinker. Not gestalt, nor complex, but competently made, with a decent balance. Its unreasonable price point precludes me from buying it again, but the vanilla bean is lovely and I'll enjoy finishing the bottle. Worth trying once, and absoutely drinkable.
