How can you sell a beer this good for less than $1.25. (It was less than $1.10 just before Trump began his second term of bomb-throwing... but the U.S. economy is another matter.)

Extra Malt Looks average only because of its gold-to-amber colour; otherwise it needs foam and lace to stick around. Smells are mostly sweet malt. While a sweet beer, it does stay balanced for this malt-head; but hops do enter the scene and they keep this as a refreshing lager instead of falling into the malt liquor category. Medium-mouthed to full for a lager; yet smooth... bringing us back to average Looks because of low bubbles.

To explain my Overall Hugs... I'm very impressed with this Carrefour brand based on value. While this is only my second from the Carrefour brewing line, they clearly know how to contract out and get a very decent brew for the price. Both of my brews came from a neighbourhood Carrefour Express. I wonder how much better is the selection at one of their large stores.

Carrefour “Saer Brau Extra Malta”
33 cl can coded “L204606 2809XX. 21/03/2025”. Sampled on 19/11/2023
€0,55 @ Carrefour, C. Tudescos 1, Madrid, ES

Look: A clear very deep golden/amber colored body is capped by a short head of white foam that drops readily and leaves little to no lacing behind.
Smell: Malt and sweet bread. No hops are found.
Taste: As the aroma suggests it’s sweet, malty, and bready with a touch of yeasty fruitiness. Minor floral and herbal hops lay in the background. A moderate bitterness leaves it sweetish in the finish but not sticky or cloying, most likely due to the alcohol which is fairly well veiled.
Feel: Medium bodied on the fuller side and lightly dextrinous. Gently crisp and then smooth.
Overall: The saving grace to this beer, oddly enough, is the higher than usual alcohol content which helps to balance it. I say that because the alcohol in many price-point beers is usually to their detriment because of poor fermentation practices.
