CANNED ON 4/20/18.
Foreboding amber with decent beige head and lacing. Stellar can art though.
Aroma is malt-forward with heavy mid- and mid-high range caramel malts which clouds the hop aroma which is generic grapefruit and pine with resinous notes. Not much for yeast esters.
When Citra is on the label, you expect a Citra-forward aroma and flavor, and this beer does not deliver at all. A balanced DIPA with minimal Citra character is misleading. Flavor reminds me of OB Gordon in many respects, and this is a beer I like a lot. However, this beer is not Citra-forward at all with mostly a medium crystal malt flavor, moderate to high bitterness, and some orange, grapefruit, and pine resin hop flavors. Clean from a yeast standpoint.
Feel is medium given the crystal malt presence and the lowish carbonation. Some sticky caramel-toffee sweetness on the back end/aftertaste.
I like this Beer but it should be called an Imperial Red/Amber Ale rather than and Imperial IPA. Lickinghole, Re-brand this Beer so that the customers’ expectations are on target rather than way off base. I expected a Kern River Citra or a Double Sunshine IPA not OB G’Night. It’s a great Imperial Amber, but a below-average to average Imperial IPA.
