Lickinghole Creek Craft Brewery is located on 290 pristine acres in Goochland County, Virginia, USA, Earth. We love to make innovative, premium beers for beer lovers. Small batch flavor, and hard-to-come-by ingredients are just by-products of the craftsmanship and care that goes into each brew.
We grow many of our own ingredients such as: wheat, barley, hops, berries, pumpkin, and what we don’t grow, we source it from local farmers, and from global farming communities. We strive to be global stewards of clean water, and, unlike most breweries in the world, we sustainably source our own water onsite. Many of our signature beers are aged in ultra-rare Kentucky Bourbon barrels up to 12 months and we utilize some of the finest hops in the world in our brews.
We get a lot of questions and giggle’s about our name and the brand. Goochland County is a real place. The name Lickinghole is as old as the people who first discovered it. In fact, it predates proper English. It's the creek that runs through the farm. Technically it's Little Licking Hole (you guessed it, there is a Big Lickinghole). You'll also notice that it's one word, and not two. A lick (n) is a waterway somewhere between a 'rill' and a 'stream,' often changing in depth, path and size. Many of these 'lick' waterways had minerals and nutrients that animals would seek out, creating a 'licking hole' making it a great place for Native Americans and early Colonists to hunt animals.

Get ready for a drive in the countryside. This farm brewery is a bit out of the way, and you'll be going down lots of country roads. The last bit is a gravel drive that leads up to the barn and really spectacular views. I was the first to arrive on a quiet Saturday morning and prety much had the place to myself. There are a few taps and lots of cans available. Plastic cups are the only drawback. Really good beer coupled with magnificant surroundings. Must visit.

Service is awful and the beer sucks. Owner continually goes on drunk tirades and fires her master brewers and they don’t come back. Nobody knows what they’re doing and it shows. Save yourself the trouble and get a 12 pack of Budweiser

V: Definitely one of the more interesting breweries I've visited. Located on a big farm in the middle of nowhere, Goochland County, it has some of the best scenery. The inside of the building is a bit cramped, with a few picnic tables and chairs as seating. But the outside is fantastic, with a big patio area, a burn pit, and an open field.
Q: The quality appeared to be high, with everything made on the premises.
S: The service was very prompt, friendly, and knowledgeable.
S: A nice selection of Lickinghole's beers, with Redneck Wedding (a quadrupel), Don Kiote (a black cherry DIPA), 9 Mile Goodwater (an IPA), Heir Apparent (imperial stout), and 6 others. A good array of stuff. They lose a few points for serving the beer in plastic cups, though.

Haven't been to visit, but something that cannot be stressed enough - especially for people who are not familiar with LCCB stouts:
They need to be aged.
The improvement in the quality of the beer between fresh and aged one year is greater at LCCB than any other brewery I have had - and I've had a lot of stouts. The closest comparison I can think of is Firestone Walker, whose stouts are too hot fresh, but settle down nicely when aged.
I find most LCCB stouts too bitter/ hoppy/ chalky/ charcoal/ bitter dark chocolate tasting fresh. Especially all their stouts built off the Virginia Black Bear base. But here is the thing - those hops fade with time. That bitter hoppy flavor goes away. And what you are left with is a remarkable stout.
LCCB is flooding Northern Virginia with a ton of big barrel-aged stouts. My recommendation to people who have never had LCCB before or drank their stouts fresh and didn't like them: plan to age your bottle. It vastly improves the beer. The rule for myself with LCCB bottles is at least eight months.

Setup on a farm, Lickinghole has an excellent venue on a large spread of land. The taproom is small, but the ability to walk around the property makes it special. They occasionally have food trucks for their release events and their barrel aged stouts are great.

I am just getting around to reviewing this brewery but do not have much to add to the other reviews. The brewery is a little out of the way even for a Richmond resident but the setting and sights are great. Knowing my fondness for Virginia craft beer, my grown kids took me there for fathers day. We had a great time listening to the music, eating some good food provided by the food trucks, and of course drinking some great beers (other than the designated driver). We plan to visit the brewery again but in the meantime I will purchase their beer at the various stores in our area.

Farm brewery with limited output, and therefore a somewhat limited selection. The day we were there, there were two pale ales and four Belgians - although I know they make more varieties. They fit around the average of all their beers.
The place is definitely out of the way and is a laid back, outside venue. It looks as though they might have a music stage in a field on occasion for special occasions. Didn't seem like a place you'd want to go in bad weather. There isn't seating for too many, but you can share decent sized tables with others. There are a few games around as well (cornhole, large Jenga, etc.)
Service was fine, and done with a smile. There happened to be an independent food stand offering hot dogs (and BBQ sandwiches) the day we were there, which was fine for us, but wasn't high on options.
Nice place to hit up if you are in the area or going for a release, but not sure I'd make a trek to it. If you're somewhat around, anyhow, and want to enjoy a day outside with a few beers, check it out.

Out of the way farm brewery that is very nice to relax at during a warm weather day. Both the other customers and the servers were very nice and it's just something different and out of the way (to a city raised boy who now lives in a quasi-city). Tap selection is much but they do offer bottle samples as well which I didn't realize at first. Only drawback is it is a little pricey but being a farm located in the commonwealth of Virginia (read: everything is taxed) subsidizing itself might be the cause of that (or being right outside Richmond).

Was offered samples of beers not on tap. Also hanging with just locals from the area on a cold Friday night - one of if not the most friendly breweries I have been too.

Awesome farm brewery out in Goochland County. They are making some really good brews here. Their staff also seems to appreciate the craft beer geeks making the trek out, as I've had them offer several samples of pre-release bottles and rare stuff.
The farm is massive and the brewery sits on top of the hill with great views of the farm itself and the rolling hills of the countryside. They moved their once small tasting room into the brewery itself to accomodate the larger crowds they are getting now. When the weather is nice the patio and fire pit are really nice.
Their big release parties are awesome and it's great to see the locals drive out to support them. Keep it up, guys.

Virginia's only farm brewery (as of 2014). Some of the hops, barley and other ingredients used in the beers are grown on site. There is a small tasting room and a larger outdoor tasting patio. The location is beautiful, and the owners often host live music and other events. The beer quality in my experience is consistently high. The only downside is that capacity goes way down if the weather is bad, and the location is a bit remote - but definitely worth a visit.
