Brewed with cocoa nibs, toasted coconut, pecans and vanilla beans.

German Chocolate Cake begins as a traditional German doppelbock. Brewed with German specialty grains and hops, and fermented for a long period of time - it's well worth the wait. We then condition this classic style German lager over cocoa nibs, toasted coconut, vanilla and pecans.

Prost!

16oz can from Tavour. Dark brown, clear, fizzy beige head. Aroma is nutty, some chocolate. Chocolate more prominent in the taste, sweet. All the orhercadjuncts are pretty subdued and I trouble picking any of them out.

From a pint can into a pint glass. Pour has a slight off-white foam head with a lighter reddish-brown. The german-style cardinal on the can is also adorable -- so bonus points for having a great look on that front. Scent is on the sweeter side with notes of coconut and vanilla being the most dominant. Taste is quite doppelbock with the coconut, vanilla, and slight nut-centric flavor flowing over the tongue. Feel is on the medium and smoother side with sweetness lingering (but never overwhelming).

Review #1800!

A: Black in color with a light tan head.

S: Roasted malts and toffee with some roasted malts.

T: Perhaps a slight hint of lactose, toffee, and caramel, some nice notes from the vanilla, but I am not getting a lot of the cocoa, or coconut. The vanilla is more pronounced as as it warms.

M: Light in body with higher carbonation, and a somewhat light finish.

O: Overall pretty interesting, but I'm missing a lot of the additional flavors, I do get a bit more as it warms.. I think the barrel aging might add something interesting.

Garnet colored body; clear; thin yet lasting off-white head. Interesting blend of toasted grains, maraschino cherries, roasted nuts in the smell; mildly sweet. Toasted grain and light caramel flavor; roasted nuts; cocoa powder; very little hop bitterness. Medium-heavy body; dry stickiness on the palate.

Not bad for what was intended. The cocoa and nuts come through, and the vanilla now that I think about it. It doesn't have the richness or depth of a German chocolate cake, so don't expect that per se, but has some semblance to the cake. A bit more malt richness and depth would help. Still, a decent enough novelty, but not a great doppelbock.

Poured moderately hard from a tall can into a snifter glass, forming a finger of tan head that eventually faded to a bit of lacing. Deep brown body, maybe a hint of amber color and light coming through. Smell is a bit of chocolate and coconut, nice but faint. Taste is similar with some chocolate forward followed by mild coconut and a teensy bit of bitter grains, not quite barley. Light bodied with light to moderate carbonation. Pretty solid, but not amazing.

L: Dark brown to black with a fat finger of khaki head with less than average retention to a thin forever ring with no lace.

S: Pretty placid aromas of roast, fake and artificial caramel - Like would be found in Diet Rite or another cheap cola: another problem is the dryness, where some sugars could mask the overall dreariness of this failure. That’s just the aroma!

T: Hard to swallow with any warmth at all. First couple drinks were okay but this went to resin plus cardboard plus cheap caramel additives. Ugh. Really pour.
Update to raise by a half point. Right out of the fridge cold it’s pretty decent, it just doesn’t warm well, even slightly.

F: Thinner and syrupy. Nothing to enjoy here. Is this beer or flat cola syrup. Wow. Depressive.

O: Started out okay then whoa it went south! If you chose to try it you have five minutes to drink it. Go! I think a lot of folks are just being nice with their ratings. I’ll try to give an honest impression. Update to raise a half point, aligning to improvement of taste rating.

Pours a brownish copper with more than a finger of head. The nose has a light breadiness and a tingling of hops.

The chocolate and coconut adjuncts (who the hell puts coconut in German chocolate cake anyway?) are upfront in the flavor profile. The sweetness lingers a bit before fading to dryness on the finish. It's hard to tell if all of the sweetness comes from the adjuncts or if any of it is due to the malt bill.

From the bottle, it pours a clear dark reddish brown with a modest, soon diminishing head. In the nose, it is coconut forward with chocolate behind. In the mouth, it is alcohol forward with a notes of coconut and chocolate.

I don't see a bottle date listed.

Appearance: The body is a very dark brown that appears mostly black but a dark, cloudy, reddish-brown when held to the light. The head is large and creamy textured with a tobacco stained yellow color. It has good retention.

Aroma: There is a bit of a maple syrup and brown sugar aroma to the beer with a light touch of caramel and alcohol. The aromas are very faint.

Taste: The beer has a bit of caramel flavor and a slight nuttiness with a high alcohol flavor. A touch of brown sugar is there at the end.

Mouthfeel: The body is medium with a light bitterness and easy to drink.

Overall: The label states that this is a "LAGER WITH COCOA NIBS, TOASTED COCONUT, PECANS AND VANILLA BEANS." Most of these flavors don't come through. There is a bit of nuttiness to the beer but it doesn't taste specifically like pecans. The coca and coconut are absent completely. There isn't a lot of what might be considered vanilla but there was some maple syrup character which sometimes has a bit of vanilla flavor. It didn't remind me of a German chocolate cake so that was also a miss. It's a decent Doppelbock but the beer doesn't deliver what it promises. It is enjoyable to drink but you might as well just buy a regular Doppelbock.
