No canning date (released in early-September 2020, so presumably canned within a few weeks of that timeframe)

Pours a foggy, orange-brown body capped with a half-finger of fluffy, off-white foam; sub-par head retention yields a spotty veil of cap, a moderate, creamy collar, and webby rings of lacing spread around the glass.

Aroma presents a robust, nutty roast accented with fresh brown bread crusts and a touch of hickory wood upfront, with a brief whiff of cocoa appearing into the middle; red apple and light lager yeast proceed into the back end while a building minerality fades into a mild final impression.

Taste opens with muddy notes of wet bread with a dusting of cocoa and a generally weighty, obscured malt profile; a vague fruit character over the mid-palate leads to light caramel malts and green apple on the back end of the palate as tones of mineral-heavy water comprise a muddled finish.

Mouthfeel offers a light-medium body with an unrefined, rocky carbonation; taut and stiffly crisp over the mid-palate, a minor grit and wafery texture develop into a thinning back end, where a muddied hop character presents just before a semi-watery finish.

There was an unusual promise to the aroma that is quickly snuffed out once the flavor profile is considered, seeing the beer quickly devolve into a watered-down amalgam of disparate parts. It's an untraditional take on a Märzen considering the ale yeast, though that alone may not have been this beer's undoing; it was inconsistent and lacked any semblance of focus from start to finish.

This is just an ale with a lot of malt and very little gradation. Sweet with very little layering and an annoying yeast fruitiness. Ale yeast fruitiness. Which doesn't make it a bad Marzen, rather not a Marzen or Oktoberfest at all.

BROAD BROOK OKTOBERFEST ALE 12/7/15

Poured from the 16 oz. can into a Samuel Smith English tulip.

a: Clear copper with an inch thick white head which receded to thin surface foam and spotty lacing.

s: Very mild caramel malt with light fruit notes.

t: Follows the nose. Weakly sweet finish.

m: Light to medium, ok body and carbonation tingle.

o: It has been pointed out that this is not really in the style. It's is true that as a Marzen/Oktoberfest this falls short on malt flavor and substantive feel. However it's still a pleasant, easy drinking, sessionable brew, certainly ok as a Fall and Winter seasonal. As I had the rest of the fourpack over the past month, I enjoyed it even more.

16oz. can: An ale really isn’t an Oktoberfest, but what the heck. This one pours a hazy coppery amber color. There was a bit of a tan head, but it doesn’t leave much lacing. Aroma is OK, but a little light. Some caramel malts and a musky earthiness to it. The taste is OK: only a little of the caramel malts are there. I expect more maltiness from an Oktoberfest. Earthy and a touch bitter. OK, but not an Oktoberfest.

A brewer should not call a beer brewed with an ale yeast an Oktoberfest. It is disingenuous. This beer isn't even close to what you'd expect an Oktoberfest to be, and I hope no one tries this thinking that this is representative of the style. Not even close. This beer is really heavy on the palate and lacks all the caramel and mouthfeel of a proper Ofest.

Good brewery, subpar beer on this one. Just call it a Fallfest or something like that. Most fdefinitely is not an Oktoberfest.

I only had one 16 oz. can to sample I would like to review with at least three beers. pours a cloudy copper with a one finger head with a light lace. smells slightly sweet with caramel but its weak. taste fits the style and is mostly malt. mouthfeel and overall good. I would like to try again when I can have more then one beer.

On tap at brewery. Quaffable, but just a fair representation of the style.
