Clear (?) dark red-purple color. Poured a short head that dropped down to a patchy skiff in a minute. Too dark to see the carbonation level. No lacing.
Funky yeast and bacterial scent. There is a berry smell that is not quite as strong; the type of berry is not very distinct, but it resembles blackberry. A pale malt smell, something like pie crust dough fills in the bottom. Swirling the glass kicked up a light floral perfume and bit of barnyard.
Very sour; this caused an involuntary tongue curl. There is a quick taste of fresh blackberry that gets swamped by the sour. The blackberry slowly returns as it warms up; the berry tastes very fresh, not burned like berry juice often is. The Saison style of funk is lighter than most. A light bitter builds over time and with higher temperature. The aftertaste is a stronger bitter with sour blackberry and lighter funk. After a while it fades to a tart bitter.
Light tongue tingling (and curling) as it grows to a light foam. Slightly oily.
I really liked this, but it tasted like the typical Saison flavor was held back a bit to favor the blackberry. It was very nice, but not very true to style, hence the lower overall score. I'm not sure I would change anything just to satisfy purists though.
