Brewed for the autumn season, our GOING AWRY abbey ale pours a rich orange-amber color topped with a sticky, lacy white head. We brewed it with an organic, heirloom rye grown at Thor Oechsner Farm in Newfield, NY, and malted by Andrea Stanley at Valley Malt — the East Coast’s only artisanal micro-malthouse! This exceptional rye contributes a rustic, spicy element that complements the phenolic flavors of our favorite Trappist ale yeast. A touch of caramelized Belgian beet sugar adds a subtle range of dried cherry and toffee flavors dancing in the background, while boosting the ABV and maintaining dryness and drinkability.

This was an interesting beer for sure. The rye dominates, and is very tasty, adding a spicy bready character to the beer. The beer also features flavors of dried dark fruit, caramel, and rustic Belgian yeast. This is a really unique beer, and I hope Grimm makes it again some time.

On-tap at Mugs Alehouse, Brooklyn, NY
A: The beer is slightly hazy yellowish orange in color and has no visible carbonation. It poured with bits of lacing on the surface and a collar of white bubbles around the edge of the glass.
S: Light to moderate aromas of yeast and spicy rye are present in the nose.
T: The taste has spicy notes of rye from start to finish, which mostly mask out the underlying flavors of pale malts and hints of candi sugar. No alcohol is perceptible.
M: It feels medium-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer definitely tastes like a rye beer, but the spiciness is held in check and isn't overpowering in any way. It's easy to drink because the alcohol is well hidden.
