Forcefield - Double Dry-HoppedForcefield - Double Dry-Hopped
Notes: Also known as DDH Forcefield

Our recipe for Forcefield has changed a lot from batch to batch. This year’s is similar to last year’s — a single IPA focused around Azacca and Columbus. But this time we used cryo hops, for a megadose of lupulin oils! The result is an intensely hoppy and clean beer with unique notes of fresh chlorophyll, strawberry, sherbet, and big hop resin. Very “green.” Drinkability through the roof.

Pours a clear yellow with fine, not too dense foam.

Smell is citrusy, with some resin and bubble gum and just a hint of cookie dough.

Taste is citrusy with some bubble gum and elder flower. Very well balanced bitterness, and a long, lingering hop bite.

Mouthfeel is medium, and a little sticky. Well carbonated.

I love Grimm. I will try any Grimm I can get my hands on, and this doesn't disappoint, despite the can setting me back about 13 bucks. Great IPA!

[From Notes | Consumed 7/1/17]

@ Ridgewood

Mostly clear orange-gold with a small creamy covering on top. Dank Columbus green hops, herbal spice, weed, and grapefruit peel in the nose. Pine resin, herbs, red berries, grapefruit, and light grain. Medium bodied and smooth with a crisp finish. Great dank hoppy character, much more West Coast flavor than usual from these guys.

This beer pours a fairly hazy golden color that is not nearly as turgid as most Grimm IPAs. There is a dense, 2 finger, bright white head that takes forever to recede to a half finger cap and leaves many webs and rings of lacing on the glass.

Smell is orange citrus, pine, herbal, vegetal grassiness and floral. Slightly underwhelming though.

Taste is the same, but packing more of a flavorful punch than the smell suggests. Orange is the first flavor that hits the palate, but it is quickly swept aside by the "green" flavors and a solid bit of bitterness.

Feel is light, smooth and crisp with a moderately dry finish. Goes down very easily.

Overall this is a very good beer. The flavor profile is very different from most Grimm beers, but I quite enjoy the changeup.

On tap at Joe Bean Coffee Roasters in Rochester, NY.

This one pours a slightly amber/orange, with a small head, and a good amount of lacing.

This smells peppery and spicy a bit, with some orange and soft melon, with some grassiness.

This is fairly unlike the majority of Grimm's IPAs, as it's fairly clear, and presents a more grassy/peppery/piney hop flavor, with not a ton of fruitiness. There is a hint of orange and melon, though, but it's not the dominant flavor.

This is light bodied, crisp and clean, with just a hint of malt backbone to keep it from being thin.

This is a nice switch up from the usual Grimm shenanigans.

On tap, pours a clear orange-gold. Small white head leaves decent lacing. Smell is distinctly Grimm: passion fruit, orange, mango plus a fair amount of dank. There's also some kind of big berry thing going on, like strawberry ice cream. Unique and sort of amazing.

Taste is similar. Soft smooth feel, with a tart bitter bite at the end. Another great one.

Canned 06/08/17, it pours clear gold color with a 2 finger white foamy white colored head that was packed with bubbles, dissipating slowly and leaving good foamy lacing as it went down. Rings of lacing stuck around as the brew dropped.

Smells of piney hops, grapefruit rind, orange peel and wet/sticky fresh picked weed mixed with wet cardboard and pie crust. The nose brings caramel, toffee, lemon zest, guava, pineapple, herbs, fresh cut flowers and light peppery spices like coriander and pepper. Smells dank and wet hopped even though it's dry hopped, with the malt base hiding behind the hops.

Taste is where the dry hopping comes through with a mix of dry floral hops, orange peel, lemon zest, fresh cut grass, wet cardboard, potpourri, allspice, white pepper, coriander, tart green apple, clementine, tea leaf, dank weed, tobacco, piney hops or the oily resin, biscuit, star fruit, toasted grains, lemonade and bread crust. Really complex, it's confusing in a good way as it had all kinds of flavors sliding across my tongue and leaving a mix of grains, hops, flowers and piney resin. The aftertaste is similar to a good joint with that herbal taste lingering, but in this case it brings citrus and floral hops characteristics. Really interesting flavor, I like it.

Mouthfeel is thin and watery with mild carbonation, a light bitterness and a nice toasty malt backbone that brings some graham cracker sweetness out before the peppery spices and herbal dry hops take over again and cleanse the palate. Another really tasty and enjoyable offering from Grimm, they do IPA's right.

Totally different than last years Forcefield. This one looks clear. It smells like strawberry's and chlorophyll. I like the taste, my wife doesn't. It has a peppery finish though which was unexpected.

Featuring Azacca and Columbus cryo hops... Pale gold and clear with a tall head that left lace lines behind. Aromas were grassy with light touches of pine... Flavor impressions were oily pine resin, as if coating soft pale fruits and delicate grains... Light bodied and clean-finishing - super drinkable beer... Might be a 6/8/17 canning - kinda hard to make-out...

Poured from a 16oz can into a speiglau IPA glass.

Look is a pale orange yellow with a frothy head. Remarkably clear for a DDH beer.

Aroma is herbal lemon and tropical fruits.

Taste is a nice balance of light malt and an intense hoppy bitterness with a lemon note at the end.

L - almost clear, straw yellow, two finger white head slowly fades to nothing

S - pungent lychee, honey, bacon (?!), berries

T - orange candy, spices, bitter leafy greens (like rocket or something), not bitter at first but it builds sip after sip

F - medium carbonation and thickness, slightly oily finish almost like you can "feel" the bitter aftertaste

O - I can't think of a hoppier beer under 7%. Tasted blind, I probably would have guessed NZ hops (and been wrong). Another surprising element is that it smells very sweet while only having a slight sweetness on the palate. Also, it bears only a slight resemblance to Forcefield 2016, which in turn bears basically no resemblance to Forcefield 2015. It's like they randomly name beers "Forcefield" just to mess with us. Thankfully, they're all excellent.

Pours golden yellow. One finger white head which fades slowly clinging to the sides of the snifter with nice lacing. Aroma crisp hops and citrus. Taste of hops, citrus, light melon and pine needles. This has a extremely crushable mouth feel. This would be a great beach beer. Light but tasty. Another great brew from Grimm.
