Seconds is a richly flavored dark mild ale conceived as a nod to historical English brewing practices. This roasty, crisp, and refreshing quencher of a session ale updates the traditional practice of partigyle brewing. In the old days, English brewers would produce different “gyles” from the same mash: first (strongest) runnings would produce a highly intoxicating brew, and then 2nd and 3rd runnings would make more sessionable ones. In this way, they could produce several different worts from a single mash. These would often be blended to make ales of varying strengths. Seconds is brewed from the second runnings of a massive imperial stout. As is conventional for milds dating from the early to mid 20th century, it also incorporates a small amount of dark sugar. At 3%, this is the ideal convivial ale for maintaining the gentlest buzz as you savor the company of friends and family for hours on end.

This one pours a dark amber/light brown color, with a small head, and lots of lacing.

This smells like toasted malt, roast, tea, cola, and brown sugar.

This is absolutely stellar, and a near-perfect take on the style. There's a great herbal tea-like and almost even cola-like flavor, with a crisp and firm bready and toasted malt backbone, some light roast, and a touch of chocolate.

This is light bodied, but more creamy and full-bodied than 3% ABV would indicate.

I'm probably pumping this up because it's a favorite forgotten style, but Grimm truly nailed this one.

Pours a very dark brown that looks black in the thickest parts of the glass, and brown in the thinner parts. Head is a finger of off-white, beige foam that retains well. Aroma is toasty, wafery, bready, biscuity, caramely malts with a light swig of toffee. Sweetness is mild with a bready malt backbone forming the bulk of the nose. Flavor profile is caramely, biscuity, bready, toasty malts with bits and pieces brown sugar and toffee. It's storyline is malts, while flirting with sugary notes for sweetness. Mouth feel is medium-thin with a crushed velvet, smooth, consistent effervescence. Overall, great lowkey notes that work together to form a dynamic beer hitting in at only 3% ABV. Glad to have a English Dark Mild on shelves.

Served in a 15.5oz Speigalau tulip from a 16oz can.

Pours a dark reddish brown with soft, tan head.

Smell is roasty and malty with a bit of sweetness. Notes of chocolate, coffee and rye.

Taste is soft and roasted with a nice, sweet maltiness. Notes of chocolate, coffee, oats, rye and a nice bitterness. Lots of power for such a low ABV.

Mouthfeel is medium, smooth and well carbonated.

Overall, a really nice, drinkable mild.

On tap at the Bronx Draft House, Bronx, NY.

Pours a brown color with notes of dark amber and some clarity. A creamy layer of film retains throughout, as do rings of lacing.

Dark toasted and biscuity malt aromas along with hints of caramel and toffee. There are also notes of earthy and woodsy hops.

Simply crafted flavor profile highlights dark toasted malts, caramel and toffee, and a light roast quality that adds bitterness. There is some mouth coating sweetness, however, it is mostly background to the roasted malts and the earthy and woodsy hops bitterness.

Medium to light bodied. The mouthfeel is smooth, creamy, and the carbonation gentle as is the case with many English styles. Dry palate overall along with a dry finish.

Nice sessionable English style beer. I could definitely have multiple of these.

Very tasty beer. Clear and dark amber. Aroma somewhat lacing. Roasted almost burnt maltiness. Medium bodied with a dry finish. A nice depth and complexity for such an low ABV.

Nice jet black color with some pleasant roasted malt smells. This is a style I love for its sessionable drinking. Flavors are of slight bitterness with a sugary sweet finish. Great representation of the style.

A: The beer is nearly jet black in color and only has faint hints of dark brown near the edges of the glass when it is held up to a bright light. It poured with a short light beige head that left a narrow collar around the edge of the glass.
S: Moderate aromas of dark, grainy, and roasted malts are present in the nose.
T: The taste follows the smell and is quite malty with lots of flavors of dark malts with notes of grainy malts and hints of roast. There is a slight amount of bitterness.
M: It feels light- to medium-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation. All of the malty flavors lend some dryness to the mouthfeel.
O: This beer is quite flavorful considering its low alcohol content. It is perfectly sessionable.
