Rich caramel-chocolate sweetness mingles with red-fruit acidity in Spooky Action, our deep mahogany dark sour ale brewed with tart cherries. Brewed faithfully in the Flemish Oud Bruin style, we blended 2/3rds young malty brown mixed fermentation ale with 1/3 barrel-aged sour beer, and refermented on tart cherries. On top of its caramel-laced foundation, this decadent treat shows abundant dried fruit flavors of figs, dates, and raisins plus an additional dollop of pie cherries. This is a proper keeping beer that will age beautifully, developing sherry-like complexity with the passing of seasons and years.

Pours a dark red with fine, pink foam.

Smell is tart and oaky with notes of cherries blood orange and cherry youghurt.

Taste is tart and funky, with notes of cherries, oak, lemon, cherry jam, red wine, red grapes and a hint of stables. A soft bitterness permeates along with a subtle hint of vanilla. Dry finish.

Mouthfeel is medium, dry and well carbonated.

Overall, a very nice sour that hides its ABV completely.

A: The beer is hazy reddish brown in color. It poured with a large beige collar around the edge of the glass.
S: Faint aromas of sour cherries are present in the nose.
T: The taste is similar to the smell but has much stronger - about medium flavors of sour cherries along with hints of dark fruits and vinegar.
M: It feels medium-bodied and very tart on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer is pleasantly sour and has nice flavors of tart cherries, but the aroma seems to be a little weak compared to other beers in the style.

Picked this up recently at Grimm, eager to give this a go because it was a style that I'm not terribly familiar with. This was certainly intriguing in every aspect and not like anything that I've had as of late but like nearly everything else that I've had from Grimm, this was a smooth beer full of fruit, funk, and an easygoing nature!

The liquid had a plum hue to it with plenty of bubbles rising up through with a loud, fast-settling, and lively light brown bread of a head to top it off. It disappeared so quickly that I had to keep re-pouring the bottle to keep my glass full. No lacing was left behind as the liquid was quite thin and murky. Lots of sour apple, tart cherries, oak, and a bit of vinegar in the nose as this was quite true to form. The latter two notes were very pronounced in the taste as this felt like a Lambic and a fall beer combined into one. Lively on the palate and slick like pressed fruit, this went down much easier than I anticipated...

That was partially true because of how well-hidden the alcohol was as it slightly reminded me of cider but without the sweetness. The slight presence of dark fruit, the cherry juice and tartness, and oak again gave this a nice complexity that made this beer fun and nuanced but not heavy or complex. After having this, it's obvious that more brewers need to give this style a go!
