When an anniversary ale is this strong, this captivating, this creative, its the birthday that just keeps on giving. Hanging its hat on Cashmere, Mosaic & Cashmere hops, this massive "triple" IPA gets Grimm Artisanal Ales off to another bold year.
1st Anniversary Ale pours a deep and hazy amber, rusty through its center and topped with a tarnish foam. Spicy aromas are a blend of booze and bitterness while laced with tropical, stone fruit and citrus along with a citronella perfume and a woodsy, herbal scent of potpourri. Dense honey sweetness coats the tongue as well as toasted shortbread, caramel and candied pecan in a sweeter, savory upstart to taste.
As the rich grain sweetness starts to lift, the hops bring a brunt of spirits soaked tropical fruits of mango and pineapple, a citrusy tone of orange, and then a stronger stone fruit taste of plum, apricot and cherry. Its strong booze spice brings about a cocktail taste that involves curaƧao liquor, spicy vodka and sharp brandy. Bitter, resinous and spicy with the fragrant woods of spruce and sassafras and shift toward the hops continue in finish.
Full bodied and with a lightly oily coat on the tongue, the malt sweetness is persistent even as the ale strives for a strong resinous dryness and arid alcohol evaporation. A long and spicy aftertaste leaves a prickling, numbing effect on the after palate with a long brandy soaked citrus aftertaste.

From a 16 oz can purchased at the brewery, poured into a pint glass. Gorgeous honey color, small white head of foam that dissipates quickly. Huge aroma of ripe fruit -- grapefruit, melon, orange peel, ripeness. Flavor is similar -- ripe fruity sweetness that melts into easy bitterness. Sweet malt flavor and alcohol at the end. Sticky and full in the mouth. Fantastic. A little heavier than their other triples like Maximum Boogie, but a fitting tribute to one year of the glory that is the Grimm Artisanal Ales tap room. Can't wait for the 2nd anniversary version!
