This double decoction-mashed Doppelbock lager delivers deep and delectable layers of malt-driven sweetness and roast. Notes of molasses, toasted bread, warm baking spices, dark caramel and raisin are present from aroma through to the long, lingering finish.

2/22/23 can from the brewery in Brooklyn. Pours a clear dark caramel/amber with a finger of pillowy pancake batter head that sticks around, nice lacing; smell is sweet and earthy medium roast malts, brown bread and chocolate cereal, hints of warm spices and banana; taste follows with medium roast malts, lightly toasted brown bread, chewy dark caramel, light toffee, hints of chocolate cereal and banana bread, mild grassy hops and roast on the finish; feel is medium bodied, velvety smooth, pillowy carbonation, mildly crisp finish. Like drinking a toasted marshmallow dipped in caramel, nice malt and roast character, brown bread for days, incredibly smooth. Yum.

16 fl oz pull-tab can:
Overly bready and caramelized with overly high residual sugars and subpar attenuation. Brown bread, scintillae of toast, pumpernickel.
This ain't got the nuance and subtlety of something like Ayinger's Celebrator. I've had American stabs at the style that bested this easily, and I'm not sure what motivates the 16 fl oz aluminum can format in terms of helping the beer, but this just isn't a winner from Grimm despite ticking the basic boxes fundamental to the style.

No can date
Pours a smallish foamy off white head with med retention, a bit of lacing, dark slightly clear deep mahogany to maroon color
Nose big sweet malts, toasted grain and very rich sweet bread crust, biscuity, caramel, molasses, earthy as well, with a touch of cooked vegetables but not really an off aroma I don't think, nutty, some sweet syrup, very little fruits
Taste brings more sweet malts up front, rich grain, very toasty with more sweet bread crust, nutty holiday cake with a bit of spices as well, some prune and date fruits, a bit syrupy with more caramel and molasses, mild perfumey alcohol and phenol spices, a touch of bitterness with some earthy spicy hops, candi sugar and rock candy, pretty sweet in general, sticky sweet finish
Mouth is fuller bod, lower carb, light warming smooth alcohol, a bit syrupy
Overall eh, too sweet and syrupy, too much candy and not nearly enough fruity esters or alcohol notes and subsequent phenolics, I did like the sweet-bread crust character, but otherwise the malts seemed a bit off as well

Looks like a Dopplebock
Smells like a Dopplebock
Tastes like a Dopplebock
Drinks like a Dopplebock
All in all, a pretty good Db.
Very easy drinking with little residual sweetness, but just enough.
I'd definitely get it again.

A: The beer is black when viewed from afar but when held up to a light it is clear dark red in color and has a light amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a thin ring of white bubbles around the edge of the glass.
S: Light to moderate aromas of raisins are present in the nose along with notes of dark and toasted malts.
T: The taste follows the smell and also has notes of brown bread. No sweetness is perceptible.
M: It feels medium-bodied and somewhat smooth on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: I found this doppelbock to be easier to drink compared to other beers in the style because it wasn't as heavy in body.
