From the moment we got our hands on this radiant new hop — the latest from Indie Hops, makers of Strata — we couldn’t wait to give it the Hyperfocus treatment. This newest addition to our series of single-hop DIPAs is brimming with Luminosa’s characteristic bright and sunny fruit: Pink lemonade, mango, guava and papaya. Refreshingly medium-bodied, it’s a welcome dose of tropical uplift.

Hyperfocus Luminosa Grimm Artisanal Ales IPA - Imperial / Double

Luminosa is a pretty strange hop: Husky, woody, tangy and piney. Juicy and earthy deep haze, thin body, but juicy and clean. Brightly colored pine cone peppercorn and white grapes. Herbal crunchy leaves that are matured like the Jars in grandma's cupboard

Just a typical IPA. Unfortunately nothing spectacular in nose, taste, head, or otherwise. Must say I am disappointed in this one. Almost like the ABV killed the flavors.

Look: Pours a translucent shade of light golden yellow, with a dense, one finger head of off-white foam that laces the glass well as it settles down. Very tiny, finely carbonated bubbles are just barely visible through the glass.

Aroma: Waxy tangerine oil, caramel malt, granola and honey in the foreground. Strong tropical and tart notes of pink grapefruit and lemon peel. Very light aroma of condensed coconut milk in the back.

Taste: Orange creamsicle flavors off the bat, reminiscent of orange and coconut. Goes hoppy midpalate with moderately bitter flavors of floral spruce clippings and pine sap. Some fruity notes of bubblegum and fresh peaches . . . maybe even some overripe mango hidden in between. The finish is dry and slightly bitter, ending on clean, snappy and even slightly tangy notes of pink grapefruit essence.

Feel: Light and refreshing feel. Alcohol profile is noticeable, but not over the top or boozy. Near perfect mouthfeel if you ask me - just light enough as to be refreshing but just thick enough as to convey the flavors of the beer across your palate.

Overall: Was interested in trying this as I've never had this hop variety before and figured a single hop DIPA was a good place to start. Of course Grimm didn't disappoint. This was decently refreshing and light, but with a nice focus on tangy, bittersweet tropical fruit oil offset by some really great creamy flavors of malted grains and coconut that never became obnoxiously sweet or detracted from the rich tropical hop flavor. Overall just a pleasure to drink.
