We make so many IPA’s, but every once in a while one of them really takes us by surprise with its complexity and refinement. Chance Encounter is the standout IPA of the year so far for us. Brewed in an ultra-lean contemporary west coast framework, it is dry hopped with all New Zealand varietals: Riwaka, Nectaron, and Rakau.

Poured a yellow-gold body with decent head and lace. Not too much going on in the aroma but this medium-bodied beer has a dryness on finish that adds balance to the overall smoothness of beer along with notes of slightly fluffy, tropical fruits (mango, pineapple) and it's easy to drink.

16oz can purchased from the fridge as a single for $5.83 plus tax. Canned on 3/11/25, so this beer is over 9 1/2 months old.
Look: Really nice appearance - it has a pale gold color and a frothy, small-bubbled white head with great retention and lacing. Initial pour had great clarity. Subsequent pour had a very soft haze.
Smell: Initially, I'm getting a lot of dankness on the nose along with some citrus and pine. Then I'm getting mostly green notes, which are dominant. I'm getting a lot of green bell pepper and grassy notes on the finish. I wonder if some of that green bell pepper aroma could also be masking a strong lime zest note. Smells interesting.
Taste: Really tasty. This is my kind of IPA. I really do like the New Zealand hop varieties. There's a touch of sweetness up front with nice subtle melon notes. The finish has some pithy grapefruit notes along with the green bell pepper and dank notes. The beer is very dry on the finish, but only mildly bitter. It's very tasty, interesting, and refreshing. I would say that this is more of a modern-style WCIPA because it's a very pale malt. After pouring the bottom of the can, I'm getting a bit of juicy fruit flavors including peach and subtle apricot.
Feel: The mouthfeel is medium bodied and quite crisp and clean. It's just a bit oily. Very drinkable, especially for 7.3% ABV.
Overall: I like this a lot. It's my kind of hop varieties and my style of IPA. I wouldn't mind if it had a bit more fruity/juicy character and less "greenness", but I do think that what they did here works overall and I am enjoying it. I would almost always take a green IPA over a chalky IPA.
