From the 32 oz. Crowler filled on October 19, 2016. Sampled on October 23, 2016.

It is a nice looking amber-ruby red pour with a long lasting tan head.

The aroma is mainly dark fruit, fig, and a little Belgian sweet caramel malt. Not much in the way of spice but it still smells clean and fresh.

Medium body.

Same dark fruit taste as the aroma suggests and there is a mild bitterness rather than a spicy or sweet character that I expect in the style. Decent.

The appearance was a semi-dark amber color with a lasting finger and a half’s worth of white foamy head that fell off at a moderate pace. Light stringy lace. The aroma had some dark fruit, light amount of Belgian sugar, light grassy hops, dark bread, light butterscotch and ended with a little bit of earthy to herbal qualities. The flavor moderately leaned towards the sweet side and brought in a little bit of damp sweet wood. Aftertaste was semi-sweet and somewhat "doughy." Finish was herbal with a little bit of sweet wood and dark fruit. The palate was medium bodied with a good sipping quality about it. Sly carbonation but felt fine. ABV felt as projected. Overall, it’s alright as is, but I was hoping for some "apples" and a little bit of Belgian spice. Might have again for me, but not really that close in style, to be honest.

 

 

Rich, almost ruby colored, dark amber color. Appears to be clear. Small head with little lace.

Earthy with deeply toasted notes. It smells rich.

This beer starts off without any notable flavor, waiting for the swallow. The tastes becomes "red" as in the description of Red ales -- lots of roasted malt without much sweetness. Short aftertaste with a toasty almost bread-like flavor.

I don't get any Belgian flavors. This is closer to an amber or red American ale.

Solid dubbel, biggest gripe with it was that it was a bit subdued, dark fruit notes were very mild in comparison to continental offerings, however the brown sugar sweetness, while present, was balanced and not overly sweet. The body of the beer was full, yet not overbearing, lending to a smooth and highly enjoyable drinking experience.

A: The beer is a deep amber color, with a short off-white head that fades slowly and leaves a thick lace on the glass.

S: The aroma contains Belgian yeast, caramelized malts, some fruit and some spice.

T: The taste starts out sweet with flavors of caramel, fruit and mild spices. Then a strong breadiness comes in from Belgian yeast and a hearty malt character. The hops presence is mild but complementary and brings a good balance. The after-taste is slightly bready and slightly sweet.

M: Crisp and smooth, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is slightly sticky.

O: Tasty, goes down easily, not too filling, decent kick, good representation of style, this is a solid beer to drink for a while.

 

 

Another fine beer from Schilling, and second only to their Erastus trippel.

 

 

 

 

I cannot begin to say enough about this great brewery in Littleton New Hampshire. Nestled in an old gristmill right on a river it is the perfect setting for some fantastic beers to be enjoyed. After having about six different types of the beers, I finally decided that the Grotius was the best one for me. This abbey style dubbel is one of the best I have had. It looks beautiful, has a fantastic head on it and a nice finish to it. Pair this up with one of their delicious flatbread pizzas and you got the perfect afternoon in the beer garden! I cannot wait to go back to this place again to sample some more of their fantastic brews.
