16oz can poured into a snifter.
A: Mahogany brown of the darkest shade, two fingers of khaki-colored, fine-bubbled head. Retention is great. Small, broken rings of lacing stick to the glass in slightly chunky patches.
S: Brown bread, bit of brown molasses, grainy and toasty. Vague fruit skin sort of impression, sort of like faint golden raisin. Subtle campfire smoke. It's a more subdued nose overall, and takes time, warmth, and some strong sniffs to get the full breadth of it.
T: Great grain and toast character up front. Brown bread, for sure, with some brown molasses and/or treacle sweetness. Campfire smoke is more apparent than on the nose, but still rather tame. Tastes beech-y to me. That golden raisin/fruit skin character is here too, and more likely some sort of decoction, malt-derived thing. Subtle herbal spice and earthiness from the hops. Starts sweet and malty, but dries into the finish. Trailing brown bread, hop spice, very faint smoke, and a soft oakiness.
M: Full bodied and very rich. Melanoidin-heavy like a doppelbock, with a texture that is coating but never sticky. Silky-soft and chewy, Ample carbonation pricks and scrubs fairly vigorously. Perhaps a whisper of wood tannin.
O: A very different approach to a Baltic Porter than almost anything else I've ever had. It almost feels more like a doppelbock, and I'd bet that this has been decocted. Though I do love a good smoked beer, I appreciate that the smoke character is subtle. It allows the whole foeder-lagered experience to come through. Maybe one for the more formally educated uber beer geek/brewer to appreciate rather than the mass market. I wish more info could be had on this one, but it doesn't even appear on the Schilling website, curiously.

Can. Very dark brown with small tan head. Smoky fruity herbal chocolate aroma. Very sweet per style chocolaty but very fruity. Tastes a little like cough syrup at first. Very light bitterness but still fairly dry with lingering smoky fruitiness chocolaty. Surprisingly not cloying. Almost forgot to mention that I don't like Baltic porters to begin with, and I only try the smoked ones because I love smoked beers.

We love reviews (150 characters or more)! Check out: How to Review a Beer. You don't need to get fancy. Drop some thoughts on the beer's attributes (look, smell, taste, feel) plus your overall impression. Something that backs up your rating and helps others. Thanks!
