Rügen combines an intricate malt bill with the subtle influence of our oak Foeder to produce a brooding take on the regional specialty of the Baltics. Brewed with a balanced measure of beechwood-smoked malt and rested on American Oak for over 2 months, Rügen is a sipper that opens as it warms. Pouring a near black, notes of smoke, subtle anise, and molasses waft from the glass. Tastes of raisin, dark chocolate, toasted brown bread, and lingering oak. Rügen finishes with a smooth and velvety mouthfeel.

Pitch black almost cloudy body with two finger of mushroom brown foam. Smells of smokey dark chocolate, licorice, faint rustic oak, decent earth and mild old leather. Taste is smokey and earthy the whole way through with notes of dark chocolate, anise, charred oak, hint of licorice and I swear coffee beans are in there somewhere. Dry, smoky and thick but smooth, leans robust instead of sticky

Look: It pours very dark brown with a tan head. Head retention is very good.

Smell: It has dark fruit notes that feature prunes combined with light smoke. There are some roasted notes with a touch of caramel.

Taste: The smoke is stronger in the flavor and combines well with the roast and the prunes. There are some low licorice notes with a bit of cherry.

Feel: It has a medium full body with a bitter finish that is on the moderate side. There is a bit of sweetness with the bitterness.

Overall, the smoke is the star, but the over flavors combine well with it.

Modiale 2023 bottle pour. That kind of dark with Bit of flander red taste with long finish. Dark brown, different schilling and that's also a good thing.

Rich malt backbone. Smoke flavor comes through nicely, just the right amount. Smooth and creamy texture. Dry finish.

From a 16 fl. oz. can dated with a BB of 06-30-23. Sampled April 9, 2023.

Handsome looking dark mahogany brown color with reddish hues n the light and a tan, lasting head.

Aroma of dark chocolate malts, dark roasted malts, dark bread, fig, earth, but little to no smoke.

Velvet medium mouthfeel.

The taste begins sweet and dark but the biting earthy bitterness really shows up at the finish. It lingers. Not much smoke. Little to no booze.

So, a little Porter style hybrid we have here huh? Smoked Baltic Porter, I can absolutely get on board with that. I tend to prefer Baltic Porters, but I do like any kind of smoke in my beer, so I’m betting this will be a home run for me. Let’s crack itnopen

Pours a very dark brown with 3 fingers of creamy tan head that slowly fades to a cap and leaves decent lacing

The nose here is pretty gentle but it’s very balanced, though not exactly smoky. I’m picking up on aromas of milk chocolate, dark bread, toasted oak, brown sugar, raisin, light tobacco, and a hint of smoke

It’s more expressive in taste, both in its smoky notes and its sweeter notes. On the front end of the sip I’m tasting cocoa powder, black cherry, molasses, beechwood smoke, charred oak, medium roast coffee, brown sugar, light vanilla, and herbal hops. The swallow brings notes of raisin, beechwood smoke, molasses, black cherry, milk chocolate, dark toast, marshmallow, toasted oak, light herbal hops, and nougat

A medium body pairs with gentle carbonation, resulting in a slick and roasty beer. Finishes mostly dry with a balanced sweetness

Oh yeah, this one is damn good. Not quite as Baltic-leaning as I would have preferred, but very good nonetheless

Purchased at the brewery. An amazingly well-made beer. Deep mahogany color. Poured a thick creamy head that kept it nearly the entire glass. Nose is full, rich, roasted smoked barley. Taste is strong smoke. EtOH. Somewhat acerbic in finish with roasted malts but agreeable. Mouthfeel is creamy, smooth and packs a punch.

Pours a frothy 1 finger tannish head with good retention, nice soapy lacing, very dark basically black color

Nose has a light smooth smoke, good base porter with dark chocolate, a bit of roast, touch of burnt marshmallow, a little cocoa and possibly creamy lactose,

Taste rich base porter, some dark chocolate, creamy possibly lactose but more likely just a play on the lager and malts, a bit of roast and coffee, little charred marshmallow and burnt caramel but in a good way, nice smooth smoke, with a bit of touch of spice, a bit of bitterness with a little roasted malt bitterness and little spicy hop, light smooth alcohol, finishes a touch sticky with lingering cocoa and hint of smoke

Mouth is med to a bit fuller bod, a bit creamy, carb a bit on the light side, touch of smooth alcohol but hidden well

Overall a really nice Baltic porter, smoke was very light and would have liked a bit more of it, well lagered and soft creamy like, alcohol hidden well, a nice beer for a cool fall night

Pours a deep, dark brown, some ruby tinges at the edges, brief, short tan head, no lacing. Nose is roasted malt, light wood smoke, oak, slightest note of floral hops as it warms. Flavor is more developed - cherry and cherry wood, dark chocolate, cocoa powder, chocolate cordial candies. Not getting much in the way at all of smoke, however. Mouthfeel is pleasantly full, though not chewy with a dry finish. This is a solid beer, but I would not have guessed at the smoke without seeing the label, so it loses a few notches for that.

Poured from a 16 oz can, dated 03/31/22 into the test glass.
A - Espresso color, wih a thin off white cap. During the experience the cap dissasembles into a thin ring.
S - A hint of that smoked malt, earthy, mmilk chocolate, a bit of anise, and dried tobacco.
T - Here the offering runs in a well defined lane, a bi of cocoa, a dusting of coffee, woody oak, and some well refined smoke malt.
F - Medium in body, rich in texture. pleasing dry finish.
O - A fine Baltic Porter, the ABV is well hidden, texture is lovely. As for the smoked malts, they are deftly applied and add a nice element
