We’re proud to debut Schatten, a Schwarzbier brewed in collaboration with our friends at @theseedbeer.
We greatly admire the team at The Seed. They make fabulous beers across the board, and beyond a commitment to excellence in the craft, they are deeply committed to local agriculture and innovative beers and methods. Schatten is our shared expression of our friendship and values—a dark lager brewed with 100% New Jersey–grown malt—and is the latest in a series of collaboration beers that we’ve had the pleasure to develop with this dynamic brewery.
Named for the German word for “shadow,” Schatten pours a deep mahogany hue with a lingering, light khaki foam. Herbal hops, walnuts, and cocoa powder define the aroma, followed by a malt-forward palate built on grain sourced primarily from @rabbit_hill_malthouse in Shiloh, NJ. Notes of baker’s chocolate, coffee grounds, biscuit, and subtle toffee carry through to a smooth, gently bitter finish—an ideal beer for the colder months.

Pours a cola brown color with an absolutely monstrous khaki head. Excellent retention with some nice cobweb lacing.
Very roasty aroma. Roasted malts, toffee, burnt caramel, baker's chocolate, and brown sugar.
Flavor has a lot of roasted nuts, toffee, brown bread, dark chocolate, and light floral hops.
Medium-light bodied with moderate carbonation. Very smooth and dry on the finish.
Overall, a great dark lager. 4's across the board. Maybe a bit roastier than I like for the style but still exceptionally smooth and drinkable.

It isn't black which throws me if you're going to call it a Schwarzbier. Looks and drinks like a dunkel, albeit a robust one. Despite, that flavor is nice for a dunkel. Nutty, notes of brown bread, toffee...

Another winner of a collab from Schilling. Pours dark copper, i wish it were a skooch darker. Aroma is a wonderful balance of dark malk and some lightly floral hop. Flavor is... amazing! Some notes of chocolate, nuts, and warm bread all mingle with nothing trying to steal the show. Mouthfeel is slightly watery but smooth as silk.
