Shadow of the Wizard is a layered blend of Cellarmaker's most unique barrel stock. Built on Barleywine aged in Eagle Rare Bourbon barrels and Imperial Stout aged in Savage & Cooke Rye barrels, it exudes notes of fudge brownies, caramel pot de crème, and flan. A single barrel of Munichwine, double-aged 34 months in Blanton’s and Booker’s, rounds out the blend with warming heat and flavors of burnt marshmallow, molasses cookies, and sticky toffee pudding.

Pours deep black-brown color with a slight reddish hue. Aroma is complex combination of many flavors -- molasses, toffee, dark fruits (dark cherries), burnt marshmallow and sweet bourbon. Taste follows nose with a bit of intensity. Toffee, dark cherries, bourbon, burnt sugar/ marshmallows & molasses. Mouthfeel is just into the Full category.

Fires on all cylinders. I thought the stout was going to complicate this into ash tray territory, but OMG it’s all English toffee caramel meets spiciness and heft and everything a stout/barleywine drinker would enjoy. Got in a trade, but the $35ish price tag is worth every penny. I think the Eagle Rare is really pulling this into the upper echelon of special.

Milk chocolate-covered caramel, prominent brown sugar, dark fruity prunes, and a subtle bourbon barrel nose on this one! Taste follows exactly with a sweet brown sugar, caramelized raisins, and a bourbon barrel finish. Sweet Lu likes sweet drinks but this is at my limit! Ha! It is very sweet upfront. As it warms, the sweetness is dialed back a bit and the barrel starts to assert itself...makes it a touch more balanced. Good!

Look - Pours a clear dark black-brown color with a very light head that quickly disappears. A light head will generate on the side of your glass if swirled.
Smell - Cherries, molasses, marshmallow, toffee, flan, and brownies. Very nice!
Taste - I'm still getting a nice cherry-like flavor, which isn't anywhere in the description. Also notes of toffee, flan, marshmallow, and bourbon.
Feel - Easy drinking for a 14.6% ale. Nicely carbonated, nicely sweet, and all around good.
Overall - Another fantastic barleywine from Cellarmaker!
