32 oz. growler filled last week, poured into a 20 oz. shaker.
A - Pours a chocolate brown with flashes of deep copper. Full five-finger head of loose, sudsy foam is a dark khaki tan, looking like a chocolate milkshake. It takes several minutes for it to slowly collapse, eventually leaving the surface clean. Held to a full-spectrum light, the beer is essentially black and solidly opaque - not a bit of light penetrates the glass anywhere.
S - A malted milkshake to start, followed by notes of lightly roasted coffee. Hints of chocolate sauce emerge as it warms in the glass. Even later, notes of floral hops appear at the front-end of the nose before giving way to the roast.
T - Roasted malts with traces of burnt toast. Hints of 80% dark chocolate with bits of dark caramel. Consistent from start throughout the finish, which contain just a touch of the hops.
M - Smooth, but with some fizziness. Carbonation is present, but subdued. Body is light and thin, but not watery due to properly integrated components. Short, quick, clean finish.
O - A pleasant, straight-forward porter that's simple and drinkable. It isn't a mislabeled stout. A great starting point for a recipe, it needs to develop some more depth and character in future editions.
