The can says "DRINK FRESH" but I don't see a date listed anywhere.
Appearance: It has a nice dark brown body with hints of honey gold, auburn, and umber. It has a medium-sized head that is very slightly off-white. The head fades slowly to a frothy cap with good lacing and retention. It has a light haze to the beer. As a whole it looks very nice.
Aroma: Light notes of iced tea and soft coffee grounds. There is a hint of tootsie roll chocolate.
Taste: Up front there is tea and coffee with a hint of cocoa. As it passes over the tongue there is a light bitter character without any flavor. The back of the palate is watered down iced tea and bitterness. The aftertaste has no real flavor but there's a lingering bitterness. After a while there is a bit of a doughy flavor that starts to come through alongside a bit of acorn flavor. The added complexity in flavor is nice but still seems at odds with the overt bitterness.
Mouthfeel: It has a pronounced bitterness and a body that rests on the upper edge of light. The texture of the beer is great but it has this unbalanced and over-reaching bitterness which throws everything off.
Overall: The can states that this is a "RED RYE LAGER" but it really seems to be missing the rye flavor and aroma. There is a definite and strong bitterness to the beer that could be crushing some of the other flavors but the beer tastes very unbalanced and raw. The aromas in the beer are really good so there are some redeeming characteristics but as a whole it isn't one I would pick up again or recommend right now. The aroma is nice enough that I would try it again in the future to see if it was perfected.
