As advertised, this is a opaque, black beer that creates a generous collar of tan foam when poured from the growler. There's a lot going on in the aroma, from woodsy hoppiness to wintergreen, earth, peat, and the slightest suggestion of Band-Aid. Rather roasty and full-bodied for an IPA, this is a beer approaching Porter territory in my opinion. Dark, heavily-kilned malts and a degree of piney flavor greet the taste buds along with rye spiciness a substantial dose of herbal bitterness. The finish is leathery and somewhat astringent with traces of molasses-like sweetness underneath. Not necessarily a lock for any one style, Black Rye is a memorable release if nothing else.
