Watermelon Whale Cake starts out as a traditional style cream ale brewed with large quantities of corn in the grist bill creating the classic cream-y body cream ales are famous for (no lactose in this style). We then double down on the fruit addition, in this case Watermelon, to complement the easy drinking nature of the base style. Flavors and aromas of beach days and picnics balance out the refreshing medium-to-light body on our favorite warm weather seasonal series.

A: The beer is very hazy to cloudy pinkish, brownish yellow in color. It poured with a quarter finger high white head that died down and left a narrow collar around the edge of the glass.
S: Light to moderate aromas of watermelon are present in the nose.
T: The taste follows the smell but also has some underlying notes of corn from the cream ale base.
M: It feels a bit more than light-bodied and smooth on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer is very easy to drink and has some refreshing properties. The aromas and flavors of watermelon aren't "gimmicky".

i think in the end i like the strawberry edition a little better, watermelon is such a tough fruit for beer, but alas they give it a good run here and this is tasty too. pinkish red and cloudy in the glass under its frothy stained head, looks almost tomato juice-esque to me, not overly sexy or refined, but the nose is right because the watermelon smells like the real thing, very natural, boldly dosed, juicy and summery, and without any of the green rind bitterness that some of these have. the base beer definitely has some sweetness to it, even without the watermelon and even without any lactose in the mix, and frankly this would be sweet to me just as a cream ale, quite a big contribution from the corn in the mash i reckon, and not fermented out as dry as some, this cannot all come from the watermelon addition. i do like how natural the fruit part of this is, but the beer overall tastes and feels a little messy, summery and authentic as it is, its not real drinkable. lots of body and it hangs long on the palate after each sip, despite being kind of minimal in terms of beer elements in the flavor, like the grain taste is light, the yeast and hops are close to invisible, but this has staying power. id like it better, and it would fit the season more appropriate if it were all lighter and drier, but if this texture is the cost of the genuine fruit profile, ill take it over the alternative. this is a cool idea and series, id love to see some fall fruits in future batches, apples would be sick!

Good, not great. I cannot even say "fair representation of the genre" as I have no idea what this is supposed to be. So take my review with a grain of salt. Needs more hops, lol...
