Blackthorn 2nd Anniversary Ale is a tribute to Drogheda Ale, a once-popular Irish beer that dates back to the early 1800’s, brewed only with Irish Ale malt & East Kent Golding hops. For just two simple ingredients, this medium-heavy bodied ale is incredibly complex with a striking copper hue, fruity aroma, and lingering warm finish.

Poured from a 22 ounce bomber in an Imperial Pint glass. Bottle #76 of 365 bottled for the brewery’s 1st anniversary, early 2016. I’ve had it since that day. The beer lasts, the brewery did not, it folded.

Dark caramel copper color, translucent and capped with a dirty white film. No lacing.

Aromas are strong; brown sugar, molasses, and dark fruits of plum and figs.

The dark fruits are soaked with dissolved sugar and alcohol, as is the Irish malt. Flavorful but sweet.

Medium plus body, not heavy. Lingering fruit and sweetness.

Nearly seven years old and it held up well. Pretty clean for an 8.1% abv unfiltered malt bomb.

On tap at the brewery. Pours copper with thin white head. Taste is much bigger than the appearance. Dark fruit and molasses are present. Feel is silky, more like a scotch ale. A tasty brew.
