this certainly alters the base beer quite a bit, bringing it all the way up to 12% abv, and being so strong and sweet and boozy that the original subtle pumpkin and spices are lost a little bit. not the most pretty beer to looks at, mostly flat, real hazy, dark rusty autumn orange. the label is awesome though, and the black wax looks sharp. aroma of nutmeg and bourbon, tons of it, kentucky bourbon barrels lend a very sweet oaky character and the alcohol of course to the aroma. still some nice malt layers in here, and perhaps a bit of the squash, but this aspect is way back. the flavor is great, really pretty driven by the bourbon barrels, vanilla and alcohol heat, with the wood tasting mature behind it, old, mellowing to a degree. plenty of malt backbone here, i appreciate it being a little denser there, but it could really stand some carbonation, this drinks almost still, and with the heat and sweet, its a lot to even share a bomber of this one. i think this is great beer, not as calculated and refined as the not barrel aged edition, but still real good, i wish i let it cellar a year. the only turn off here of any consequence is the 18 dollar price tag... yikes!
