I had spent my seCANd half of New Beer Sunday (Week 694) working on a brewery horizontal of D9 BC's beers when I suddenly ran out of steam. The CANQuest (tm) dictates that I not press on if I am not feeling up to it, so I decided to save my last entry for today.

From the CAN: "Unquestionably original".

Having Crack!ed open the vent, I beCAN a slow, gentle Glug into the awaiting glass. Not only was its clarity immediately evident, but it was also forming, unbidden, a finger of dense, foamy, tawny head with good retention, leaving nice lacing in its wake. In instCANces like this, I like to allow the beer to do its own thing. Color was Yellow-Gold (SRM = 4 - 5) with NE-quality clarity, prompting a return visit from The Gelt Gang of Midas, Mammon & Croesus, all vying for a taste. Nose had a strong pine resin quality acCANponied by a light tropical fruitiness and even a bit of fusel alcohol. Hmm. Mouthfeel was medium-to-full, not quite creamy, but definitely big for the style. The taste was interesting with a high level of pine resinousness, some grapefruit bitterness and a little but of tropical fruit sweetness. It was the kind of mélange that I have been advocating for in recent weeks & months. I liked the tropical hop AIPAs initially, but then I beCAN to miss the bitterness that is a hallmark of the style. I had the same problem with the hazy (cloudy) NE AIPAs, but I have had a few recent AIPAs that seem willing to blend both PNW hops and tropical hops, which is fine. It makes for a juicy bitterness that really CAN't be beat. I was rather shocked to see that it registers at 7.2% ABV since it was very easy & very pleasant to drink. Finish was dry and while I am not going to lie & say that it was not bitter, the bitterness was held in check to the point that I was drinking the heck out of it without blinking. YMMV.

I cannot tell how fresh the can was as there was no date on it. It pours golden and clear with a nice 3-finger head. The nose is piney and floral and the taste is bitter upfront but mostly malty especially toward the back end and in the retronasal aroma. Medium body and with mild carbonation.

I don't see a date listed anywhere on the can.

Appearance: The body is slightly hazy with a medium amber color. It has a large creamy colored head that has very good retention.

Aroma: It has a very awkward aroma. It smells a bit like cat food and crawdad blood that would be used in bait. I keep going back to take a sniff, thinking it will change for some reason, and it doesn't. After a while I started to pick up a bit of okra. It smells horrible.

Taste: The taste closely mimics the aroma. I don't know what cat food tastes like but I'm guessing this is it, given that it smells like it too. From the get-go there is this acidic flavor that just makes the beer hard to swallow. It is quickly followed by this astringent tasting wood flavor and a ton of vegital flavor. It is unpalatable.

Mouthfeel: The beer is extraordinarily difficult to drink. It is extremely acidic and bitter without any redeeming qualities. Normally one would welcome high bitterness in an IPA but this time it just feels like it compounds the negative qualities of the beer.

Overall: It was a very bad drinking experience. I was not prepared for this. In the future I will be much more apprehensive when buying a beer from this brewery. After tasting this beer I looked at other reviews and it appears I have had the worst experience (so far). I would strongly suggest not buying this unless you want to take a gamble. Given the alternatives on the market I do not believe it makes sense to take such a gamble.

Poured from a 16 OZ can into a pint glass. The appearance is an amber brown color with a small white head. The aroma is spiced (pepper?) tropical fruits with some hops. The taste is mango blended with hops. A decent beer.

Pours into an imperial nonic a dull brass color with a thin quick to fade white head, very 'dull' looking. Some sweet onion and tropical fruits come thru in the nose, quite oniony as a matter of fact.Mango flavors with a touch of ruby red grapefruit over top of a pretty big mildly sweet bready base. Not really enthused with this beer, decent but not very sticky. Not really worth seeking my opinion.

A: Pours a crystal clear golden honey in color with moderate amounts of active visible carbonation rising from the bottom of the glass and moderate amounts of golden yellow + amber colored highlights. The beer has a two finger tall sudsy foamy light beige head that slowly reduces to a large patch of slightly mottled medium thick film covering the entire surface of the beer and a medium thick ring at the edges of the glass. Significant amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Slightly stronger than moderate aromas of floral, citrus/grapefruit, and tropical/mango hops with a light hint of lactose-like sweetness. Moderate aromas of biscuit + toasted malts with light aromas of grainy sweetness.

T: Upfront there is a moderate flavor of biscuit + toasted malts with light amount of grainy sweetness as well as a hint of lactose-like sweetness. That is followed by slightly stronger than moderate flavors of floral, citrus/grapefruit, and tropical/mango hops which contribute a slightly heavier than light amount of bitterness which lingers for a short while leaving a light fruity hop flavor lingering.

M: Medium bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation. Initially crisp with a hint of creaminess and a light amount of stickiness in the finish.

O: Easy to drink with well hidden alcohol and a pleasant mouthfeel. Enjoyable.
