Yikes! This was a mess! I'm not sure if I got a bad batch or an old beer, but this did not really resemble a saison to me. It was soapy in texture and test. I tried to give it the benefit of the doubt, but it was pretty disappointing. I will make sure to give it a second chance when I visit the brewery and can get some fresh beer!

650ml bottle, the latest seasonal from this upstart Columbia Valley brewery.
This beer pours a mostly clear, bright medium copper amber colour, with two fingers of puffy, loosely foamy, and well bubbly off-white head, which leaves a few broad swaths of melting iceberg lace around the glass as it quickly sinks away.
It smells of bready, doughy, and lightly caramelized pale malt, a soft earthy yeastiness, hints of benign hard white cheese, muddled savoury spice (probably coriander and black pepper, but it's not that discernible), and a touch of citrusy alcohol. The taste is grainy, semi-sweet wheat and pale malt, a faint earthy funkiness, white pepper, ethereal clove, still tame white cheese notes, and a leafy, weedy, and mildly floral hoppiness.
The carbonation is average for the style, just a decently supportive frothiness, the body a sturdy medium weight, and generally smooth, nothing really up for an unnecessary tangle here. It finishes off-dry, the bready, grainy blended malt not seeing a lot of lingering counteraction.
I found myself getting more of an ESB vibe out of this one, rather than anything overtly Saison-esque - the spice and yeast are just too underwhelming, and the hops a bit too evident to aver otherwise. Maybe the last Doc Tegart batch left a bit of residue for this particular seasonal run, or something, but overall, not a bad-tasting brew, whatever it is.
