Sampled on tap at Kraftwerk during their New Holland event on 2/5/11. Listed as Oak Aged Charkoota Rye and also as Charkoota Rye(Whiskey Barrel Aged).
Pours a deep dark ruby/chestnut brown color that appears almost black in the glass with dark mahogany edges when held to a light source. Half finger beige head that quickly fades into a thin ring. Minimal lacing.
The barrel aging of the base beer has amped up the aroma of this beer significantly. There's now an excellent sweet whiskey presence along with subtle earthy oak and a good bit of vanilla/marshmallow character. Doesn't smell as smokey but it's laying underneath.
Medium bodied and much hotter than I prefer with a blast of burning whiskey that lingers throughout, overpowering the other flavors, into a sweet finish. Lots of whiskey and only some subtle oak. The vanilla smoothes things out a touch but most of the complexity and smokiness has been obliterated. Faint charcoal, BBQ and campfire underneath but overall this beer is just too hot and one dimensional.
