Review from notes taken February 2015:
On-draught at Proletariat, New York, NY. Served into a teku.
HEAD: 1 finger worth of white colour head. Fluffy and soft looking. Moderate thickness and creaminess. 5 minute retention. Leaves no lacing as it recedes.
BODY: Hazy orange-copper colour of average vibrance. No yeast particulate or hop sediment is visible within.
Appears well-carbonated. Not a unique or special looking beer within the style, but generally appealing.
AROMA: Vague citrus, dried orange peel, pale malts, clean barley, fresh zest, biscuity yeast (but the yeast[s} bring surprisingly little aromatic funkiness given brettanoymces was used), and clove.
Aroma is of below average intensity, but lacks any off-notes or overt alcohol.
Should be fresher and more evocative/expressive. I also worry it might venture into a stale orange juice flavour profile.
TASTE: Nice build of tangerine citrus, dried orange peel, yeast-derived clove, biscuity saccharomyces, pale malts, and faint doughiness. No brettanomyces-induced funkiness comes through at all.
Not a deep, expressive, or intricate brew, but it's cohesive and pleasant.
Balanced but shallow. More of a hop emphasis would be ideal, with more hop pungency and general flavour.
This hop profile is nice but nothing special. I do like it in spite of its shortcomings.
Average flavour duration and flavour intensity.
TEXTURE: Smooth/coarse balance is just right. But it's a bit too dry (I assume from the brettanomyces), which makes it drag on the palate preventing it from feeling refreshing. Medium-bodied. Of moderate thickness. Overcarbonated.
Texture suits the taste decently, but fails to elevate the beer as a whole or to accentuate specific flavours effectively.
OVERALL: A drinkable IPA with some interesting brettanomyces yeast flavours, but not a world class expression of the style or an impressive brew overall. I wouldn't get it again, but it's nice for what it is.
