We had to import these hops ourselves but it was worth it. Southern Passion/J-17 is an exploration of two relatively unknown new South African hops. The Southern Passion hop has some subtle passion fruit and lemon/grapefruit character along with some floral notes. The J-17 hop adds some gooseberry, berry, and some slight spice.

Picked this up when it was released last month, as the date on the bottom of the can was 9/9 with "Arlo has landed" written on top of it. I liked how this had hops from South Africa as it didn't smell, taste, or feel like most of their other IPA's. This was quite smooth and reminiscent of the beers that I love from SingleCut, though this wasn't as dank or as strong.
Nice pour to this as the appearance was a murky orange that looked like juice. Lots of southern hops, mango, and papaya in the nose. The taste is where this shone as the juice from the gooseberry and blueberry came through nicely. Without a doubt one of the softest beers that I've had in a long time, this was incredibly smooth and went down easily. Slick and juicy, with a minimal hop presence, the carbonation was light and the body was moderate but not terribly noticeable as the aftertaste was that of mild tangerine.
There was enough booze in here but it wasn't too much to handle as there was just a hint of warming once I finished this off. Didn't feel the spice here but it was probably hidden under the flavors as it felt more like a light lemon zest. Fun stuff that served as proof that more beers need a profile like this, as this was so easy and fun to savor!

Pours yellow, slightly hazy, with some yeast particulates floating around. Smells grassy and slightly citrus. Taste is on the bitter side, but it is well balanced with sweet fruit and mild citrus (orange/lemon). Opens up nicely as you sip it, it started out feeling brighter, but mellowed progressively as it warmed. Moderate carbonation and smooth, silky feel. Very silky, actually.
