Other Half Brewing Co. "Cut Gems"
16 fl. oz. can. Production code or freshness dating is illegible. Sampled on 12/10/2020
Notes via stream of consciousness: So where is this from? It couldn't have come out of Brooklyn. The label reads 1401 OKIE ST NE WASHINGTON DC 20002. Do they have another production facility now? I must have missed that. Regardless, it's poured a hazy golden body beneath a tight head of white foam. The aroma is respectably bold and resinous, loaded with citrus pith and pine, and maybe a bit of berry or cherry ~ there's something interesting there. The flavor delivers much more fruitiness with a clear spike of lemon/lime. Other flavors include apple, pear, berry, a touch of peach and apricot, and a thin bit of orange. It's not sweet, but it's sweetish with a low to medium bitterness that's helped out by some acidic hop bite. The finish is dry despite it's juiciness as the sugars fade readily. Some orange is left behind to linger with a bit of raspy pine. Overall it's quite nice and I think this would make a beautiful summer beer ~ noting that as I write this that it's 32˚F outside and I'm not complaining; I just think this tropical beauty would be better enjoyed in an atmosphere where its refreshing qualities would be more appreciated. Back to the basics, it's light to light-medium in body with a gentle caress of carbonation. There's a little bit of an oat flavor to the malt and I wouldn't be surprised if oats are what's giving it it's smooth and velvety feel. Looking back, The head didn't hold up that well, but it did OK. The lacing, even after it dropped though, is pretty impressive. I see this is listed on BeerAdvocate as an "American IPA", which is OK, but it's really a New England style IPA. It's a little lighter in body than some, and perhaps that's why it hasn't scored that well so far, but I'm gonna call this one a home run, and again, a perfect beer for summer.
