Finally got around to hitting up Bissell Bros this past Friday with friends! Got there a bit before opening so we could immediately snag cans and get some samples before hitting the rest of the Portland breweries we wanted to for the day. BSW was the release for the day, and I was happy to grab one of the first four-packs released!

This beer pours an ugly, opaque pale yellow/cream color... not attractive looking in the body, that's for sure. Luckily, the wheat malt helps keep the head up and the retention very strong. A thick and intense several fingers of foam collars my glass. Nice legs here, too with a bit of solid lace backing everything up. I just don't like that color... it's a few SRM too pale for me.

I love all the hops used in this beer so I was very pumped for the nose, but it mostly blends together into a rather nondescript melange. Not that any of these notes are bad, by any means, it's just the beer kind of seems to not favor any particular element too heavily. The subtle wine-like note of Blanc, for instance, gets kind of drowned out by Galaxy, and Motueka struggles barely to the surface with its light citrus and spice notes. I mostly get resin, ripe passion fruit and ruby-red grapefruit character. Some subtle white grape skin comes out after a little bit, making me think of Blanc, but it's not enough for me. Solid stuff, but it's just too bland-smelling and homogeneous. Nothing pops out, in my opinion.

Flavor profile is pretty solid; nice wheaty chewiness with light, light biscuit undertones and flavors of grass, pine, passion fruit, papaya and grapefruit. The beer has a light mouthfeel and rather easygoing finish despite the hefty incorporation of wheat on the tongue. I think this is kind of like a less-good Fort Point Pale Ale despite the good concept and freshness going on. The body is probably the best thing about this beer; it's simultaneously fairly-flavorful and crushable and would work well in many Summer settings. Glad I picked up a four-pack of this one!

On tap at Tap and Mallet in Rochester, NY.

This one pours a bright and hazy light orange color, with a small head, and lots of lacing.

This smells soft, fruity and tropical, with oats, biscuity malt, mango, pineapple, and sweet grapefruit.

Bissell continues to be legendary at low alcohol hoppy beers. The flavor here is killer, and doesn't betray the fact it's only 5.5% ABV. There's lots of soft tropical exotic "down-under" hop flavors- peach, mango, sweet grapefruit, with soft creamy wheat and pine, and a bit of biscuity malt flavor. The oats add a nice creamy flavor.

This is light bodied, but still rich and creamy, which is great. There's a normal level of carbonation.

I really dig this one- I can count on these guys to make sessionable beers that are delicious.

Fully opaque turkey stock with a creamy off-white foam settling to a thick uneven blanket with thick, raised ridges.

Smell is spicy and slightly dank with kiwi, pineapple, mango, bubblegum, and vanilla cream topped biscuit. I got an odd hint of peanut too.

Taste is spicy, dank, piney, prickly and, yes, tropical! I get cracker, pineapple and mango with a slight astringent chalky dry finish via a medium body featuring moderate to light carbonation.

A crushable beer (I have yet to meet a Bissell that was not) with good hop aroma, initially. Lots and lots of head. not so much hope taste, almost a hoppy crèam ale.
