(16 oz can, lot # 013535, 01/22/26; purchased cold 4-pack at the brewery last week... poured at 54 F into a Tubinger mug)
L: deep garnet brown liquid, partially opaque; tight, frothy, dimpled sponge foam... big splayed collar, little to no lace
S: roasted barley, black coffee liqueur, bbq char, nutty dark chocolate, with a rustic, crusty black breadiness that slowly emerges to the fore... smells like liquid black bread dusted in coffee-cocoa powder, maybe a tinge of chocolate cake... quite intense 4.375+
T: sort of cakey first sip, but it's all the bitter cocoa and oven-baked melanoidins, with only a tiny touch of malt sweetness... the aftertaste is quite roasted barley forward... it's kind of tasting at this point like an American stout, with the slightest hint of lager yeast tainted dark lager far below... gets maltier and yeastier upon second sip, doughy even... decoction character and a bit of the hop herbals bloom about 2-3 min after the second sip... interesting degree of doughy, barmy yeast character
F: fairly plush in texture, minus the acidic tingling... amply carbonated... bit of a residual oily film left along the cheeks and tongue, with the roast and hop fire top of palate sizzling in sharp contrast
O: down to the end, I'm tasting a roasty American stout brewed with lager yeast... a bit aggressive and acidic on the dark grain character, lacking a more well-rounded take on this type... still, more than palatable (2530)

Canned 2024/12/31
Pours a creamy frothy 2 finger off-white head with fair retention, a touch of lacing, dark mahogany brown a bit clear with auburn light streaming through
Nose toasted and roasted malts, coffee, a little dark chocolate cocoa, big piney hops, a bit of spices
Taste starts with malts again, a bit creamy with more toasted roasted malts, biscuity, a hint of char, coffee, a touch of cocoa and baking spices, some earthy piney hops, hint of fruity notes
Mouth is med bod, fair creamy, med to a bit higher slight prickly carb
Overall not bad, a bit like a Czech dark lager but a bit more Americanized

Blackish brown with a full head. Roasted malt with dark cocoa with mild earth, dark nuts, and leafy hops. Smells of roasted malt with a hint of cocoa. Feel is roasty and light, but smooth, want a little more body here

16oz canned 12-3-24, opened 3-6-24.
2 finger sand colored head wit great retention and early, sticky lacing.
Dark brown body with clarity against the light.
Malty nose of brown bread and red fruits.
Roasty and toasty with a slight sweetness mid-palate.
Medium bodied with perfect carbonation. Finishes clean, with the slightest bitter touch and almost dry.
Drinkability is very high, flavorful, crushable, satisfying.
Very Good to Outstanding.

16oz can from Tavour. Dark, clean pour, thin layer of persistent cream colored head. Aroma is roasty, burnt toast, nutty. Taste brings a nice roasty bite, mild sweetness, cola with a smooth feel. Light bitterness lingers.

Poured into a Seattle Beer Week pint glass. Pours a medium to dark walnut brown, appearing dark in the glass with a fine, two finger dark khaki head with great retention and solid lacing. Aroma of biscuit and toasted malt, cocoa, mild coffee and grassy hops. Flavor follows, with biscuit and dark toasted malt with a hint of char, cocoa, bakers chocolate, coffee and a little nuttiness in the finish. Mild grassy hops. Medium bodied with light to moderate creaminess. An excellent example of this style, with a winning chocolate malt base and good coffee notes with hints of nuts. Great finish with full flavor lingering. A style that I don't drink enough of and this is a fine one.
