Not to be confused with Rockyard's other Pumpkin Ale, Plymouth Rock. This comes in bomber bottles and plainly says on the label only "Pumpkin Ale."
BOTTLE: 22 fl oz bomber format. Brown glass. White colour unbranded pry-off crown cap. Uninteresting label art. 2015 vintage. Purchased at a bottle shop in Centennial, Colorado.
Expectations are below average given the brewery. Served cold into a nonic half-pint and allowed to come to temperature over the course of consumption. Reviewed live as a pumpkin ale per the label.
No bubble show forms as it's poured.
HEAD: About 8cm wide. Off-white colour. Average characteristics, aside from above average foaminess and froth. Leaves no lacing on the sides of the glass as it recedes. Retention is below average - about 1 minute.
BODY: Copper of average vibrance. No yeast particulate or hop sediment is visible within; it's clean if a biteen hazy.
Appears adequately carbonated. Not unique or special for a pumpkin ale, but generally appealing.
AROMA: Nutmeg. Copper & CaraMunich malts.
That's it - that's all I detect. No cinnamon, no allspice, no clove, no brown sugar, no caramelized sugars, and critically - no pumpkin.
Aromatic intensity is average. Suggests a shallow simplistic brew with a disappointing absence of actual pumpkin.
TASTE: Very shallow indeed. Nutmeg and a trace of pumpkin atop a very basic CaraMunich malt backbone. Actually, the malts are so reticent they're hard to peg down. In any case, this is dreadfully simplistic, and lacks any complexity, subtlety, or nuance whatsover. Very underwhelming.
TEXTURE: Unrefreshing and overcarbonated. Smooth, wet, medium-bodied, and of average heft, thickness, and weight on the palate. It suits the taste only decently, and leaves a lot to be desired. There's no harmony of texture and taste here, and this mouthfeel fails to accentuate specific notes from the taste or to elevate the beer as a whole.
OVERALL: Not a gestalt build, nor an intricate one. Even the pumpkin is reticent and shallow. The spice profile is lackluster, and frankly there just isn't a lot of flavour here. Like most Rockyard beers, this leaves a lot to be desired. I wouldn't nab it again - even at its better-than-most $5.99 USD price point. But it's drinkable, and I've had far worse. Below average at best.
