12 oz bottle courtesy of Mile High Liquors during my summer road trip to Denver. Bottle reads "Old Gaffer Barley Wine Ale" and shows 10% abv, which differs a percentage point from what this site says. Anywho...
Short lived head atop a clear dark copper body. Tiny bubbles swirl in a lazy dance. Patchy lacework creeps slowly back to the depths keeping the glass mostly clean.
Smell is a rush of dark fruits: plums, figs, dates, and black raisins. Not sure if this is barrel aged, but there's a spiced cider quality here as well. Rum? Smells hot but enticing.
Dark fruits here as well along with toffee. A snake of heat winds its way from front to back with a viper sharp sting throughout coupled with mulling spices. I can see this being quite nice with some aging.
Very woody and drying on the finish. This must have spent time in a barrel as it's all over the finish. Quite tannic.
Overall, the Gaffer could stand some additional time in the cellar. The hots are distracting, but the underlying flavors hint at a really nice English Barleywine. If you only have a single bottle, I'd recommend some patience, but i like the potential here.

Poured as a guest beer at Trinity Brewpub in Colorado Springs. It pours a rich honey toned color with great clarity, a medium head that fades fast into a thin ring and leaves minimal lacing.
The aroma has a warm booziness in the background lurking through honey, caramel and vanilla. Rich, malty smells with toffee. Woody notes of oak and some floral hints.
The flavor was intense and rich. Orange blossom honey with tons of toffee, rich caramel and a bourbon booze in the back. Notes of oak and vanilla in the finish round off the edges for a very rich beer.
Judging for the style, this was a complex, interesting, and nicely done barleywine.

Labeled as an English Barleywine, and purported to be based on someone's homebrew recipe. Aged for a year (9 months on oak). Poured a beautiful claret color, with some minimal head. Good fruity aromas, plums, berries, vanilla and caramel. I got some good oak on the palate, along with some piney hops and warming alcohol. This one got better with every sip, and I was actually contemplating trying to get a party pig full of it for the road.
