Diesel Double IPA

okay as an american strong ale, not so much as a double ipa. this one from dockyard shoots for balance and negates the hops that make this style what it is. i think balance needs to be abandoned around the 8% abv range in ipa, but thats just me. this is all residual sugar in nose and taste, with only late onsetting hop bitterness without much hop aromatic or flavor coming through. bronze body looks the part under an inch of fading white bubbles. there is just too much sweetness here. the grain bill needs to be dialed back and the late kettle hops need to be ramped up for this to even fit the style guidelines in my opinion. not a bad tasting beer though overall, just too sweet to be hoppy too. well carbonated and drinkable for what it is, a little alcohol showing through, but it isn't sloppy. good as a strong ale, lousy as a big ipa.

12 oz bottle. Pours hazy golden copper with a medium fluffy white head that retains well and leaves some lacing.

The aroma is subdued - slightly ripe melon and a little piney hop.

The flavor is some sweet fruits and caramel malts followed by a big, slightly musty, bitterness. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with soft carbonation.

Overall, a decent DIPA. Lots of bitterness, but just OK flavors.

 

Interesting spicy flavor helps moderate the big hop overdose. Amber orange in the glass. A thin head, but a nice sudsiness on the tongue.

Very fruity, some pineapple, and plenty of malt. A sharp tang. The main event is the big hop flavor. Lots of the resins and pine, and a flowery nose. Clean and well made. A little buttery. Hugely hot with alcohol but also some nice spice. Mellow malt tames the bitterness somewhat. It's actually fairly drinkable, if you treat it as a Barley wine sort of sipping brew.

From the 12 oz bottle, and it seems like the price was right for a sixpack. I'll be interested to see what else they brew, since they seem to have covered the average brewpub styles.

 

 

 

Bottle from Total Beverage Westminster poured a clear orange amber with a small lating ivory head. Aromas of bread, earthiness, orange zest, light pine and a hint of grapefruit. Mouthfeel was medsium bodied and smooth with a dry finish. Flavors of biscuit, orange zest, earthiness and a hint of pine with a smooth dry moderatly bitter finish.
