(Notes of Nov. 07) Tasted by a half-pint at a pub in Sheffield; served by a sparkler pull.
A: nearly black with brown-ish glows, coming with a tan creamy head lingering beautifully, while the carbonation remains as low as natural for a cask ale.
S: hardly any aroma is detected... very well settled or... very well hidden underneath the froth? Given a good swirl, the lightly roasted hints are revealed, while hops are subdued showing random fruitiness only.
T: very light in flavour at first, then a quiet flow of black fruitiness manifests with elegance, hinting at bitter-sour tannic red grapes; a touch of spiciness and plenty of herbal & really chewy (roasty) bitterness linger in the end. While the sour-ish fruitiness dominates the main theme, the finish sees a faint touch as of sour-bitter roasted malt/barley.
M&D: rather clean and light in carbonation, while the body remains sound and not heavy at all, going well with the fruity theme. The long and deeply chewy bitter tail is the key to keep this ale rather more-ish.
