Village Idiot Brewing Company "Ask Kermit - Cucumber Cream Ale"
On-tap at the tasting room, unfortunately in a semi-clear plastic cup. 9 August 2014
Well, this is a weird one, so let me at least include the brewery's own notes, they're pretty funny: "Summer. The shore. Cool evening breezes. Cookouts. Mosquitoes... wait. The guys in R&D made a salad for a cookout & mistakenly used the boil kettle as their bowl. The result? A refreshing - albeit different - beer for vegetarians or anyone for that matter. 9 lbs. of cucumbers were harmed in the making of this summer oddball. Yup, it just ain't easy being green. ABV: 6%, IBUs 18"
Firstly, it tastes like cucumber, undoubtedly, so if that's not your thing just forget it. Secondly, it somehow actually works. There are liquors that have notes of cucumber (Hendrick's Gin, for example), and drinks made with cucumber (Pimm's Cup), so why not a beer that's made with cucumber and tastes like cucumber?
I can't really rate this beer beyond giving them credit for doing something that hasn't been done before, and actually pulling it off - there are no off-flavors, and the malt base simply supports the vegetable character. My only question would be where is the 6.0% alcohol by volume hidden, because I didn't find it. Overall, it's well-brewed, clean, and odd - but somehow good. If you like cucumber I'd recommend this beer, but even if you don't I'd recommend a visit because this shows both the creativity and quality that's coming out of the Village Idiot.
