Tasted from a growler filled at Lowes Foods in Apex, NC, poured into a snifter.
L - Appropriately super-dark brown color, appears a clear mahogany color around the edges when held up to the light. Light tan head is fairly thin\ck initially, but quickly fades. A ring of foam and some lacing remain throughout, along with faint "legs" on the glass like a wine.
S - Good dark malt aromas appropriate for the style, but they are fainter and more restrained than in some examples. I get milk chocolate, light coffee, light roasted grains and low smoke. No hops or yeast character come across. Maybe a light whiff of alcohol.
T - Flavors are good for an imperial stout, but not overly deep or complex. The roasted, almost burned, grains are the most prominent component. There is also a bit of chocolate and coffee, and then some earthy hops flavors, which linger in the aftertaste.
F - Medium to heavy body that leaves the mouth feeling coated is appropriate for the style. Low carbonation. Medium to high hops bitterness. Low alcohol presence.
O - This is a good imperial stout with no flaws, but it is also a bit bland, and lifeless compared to the best versions I've had.
