On tap at Bottle Logic Brewing in Anaheim, CA.

Pours an opaque black with a foamy dark khaki head that settles to wisps of film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of dark roasted malt, cocoa powder, vanilla, and char aromas. Taste is much the same with cocoa powder, milk chocolate, vanilla, and char flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of roast bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and medium bodied mouthfeel. Overall, this is a good beer with a nice mix of cocoa and vanilla characteristics that are slightly better in the taste to me.

Serving type: on tap.

after all the hype around these guys, my first beer from them is a porter. its a good porter, even a great one, but its not what i expected in that its pretty straightforward. two real things make it stand out for me, the first is its bitterness. its quite bitter for a porter, not necessarily hoppy, but bitter. whether thats from hops or gain, its tough to tell through the dark roast of the whole thing. there is a definite dark chocolate character to the finish as well, making it sort of odd on the back end, but i like it more and more as i drink on it. the light body and lower abv help it drink real easily, although i like it as it warms up too. a cool late summer to early fall porter, maybe not quite luxurious or full bodied enough for the coldest months, but a great transition beer into darker richer beer season. i liked this a lot, but was a little more inspired by some of their other stuff. that said, i think we need more porters that bring the hops, and that are intended to be a little easier drinking. very good on the whole.
