Bourbon Barrel Aged Imperial Autumn Stout

Electric Eden is an ode to autumn, when the air is crisp and still and time begins to move a little more quietly. Aromas of October waft lazily from the glass -- apple galettes with flaky brown sugar crust, sunburnt leaves, homecoming. A bright initial bite of green apple melds with the savory, golden tones of hazelnuts and rich, red-hued baking spices. A whisper of cassia-toned tobacco smoke curls through the dry, lingering finish. Medium bodied with a welcome bit of warming heat from its 14.7% ABV.

It’s been a few years since I have obtained the California legend of Bottle Logic. A shipment arrived at @warehouseliquors and I walked on over to see it for myself. After careful consideration, I went with Electric Eden. I had to. It is an apple pie stout. The beer actually nails that flavor and it is a rich and complex apple pie stout. You get apple liqueur, dark crust, and a big cinnamon pop. There is lots of nuttiness from the hazelnuts and all held together by a roasted grain base. BL delivered on this stout.

500 ml bottle into a snifter. A 2021 release, had 9/9/23.

Pours near black and opaque, thick looking, with no head and a little oily cling. Aromas of cinnamon, apple, chocolate, malt, some bourbon and caramel, other spices. The flavor is more bourbon forward, then cinnamon, apple, caramel, chocolate, malt, other spices, a hint of hazelnut. Smooth, a solid full body, well carbonated.

Thick stuff. The cinnamon and apple show especially well and there’s a solid barrel presence. Maybe the hazelnuts faded? This is a great effort, different and fairly unique. Really enjoyable.

Bottled 2021. Poured at 57°. Black with thin ruby edges; partial tan rocky cap with no retention; no ring nor lace; thin legs at best. Apple nose immediately; the aroma is baked apple pie with just a hit of bourbon. Sweet caramel candy, caramelized brown sugar; spiced apples with cinnamon; bourbon an afterthought; no hazelnuts. Smooth viscous feel; medium body; surprisingly low mouth warmth from 14.7% abv. Overall, good but kind of gimmicky; yes, it tastes like a sugary apple pie, the caramel sweetness dominates the whole; very little barrel notes. One and done.

L: Poured from a 500ml bottle into a tulip glass - dark jet black pour with very little if any lacing left behind.
S: Getting sweet aromas of bakers chocolate, apple pie, malts, some caramel, hazelnuts, also smelling some burnt brown sugar. Didn't pick up a whole lot of bourbon but can tell it's in there.
T: Definitely tastes the way it smells - getting the apple pie upfront followed by some chocolate, cinnamon, hazelnut, brown sugar. The bourbon hides in here but can be detected slightly. I feel the complexity of the beer with the other flavors hides it well, which is nice but I was hoping for a little more bourbon.
F: Medium bodied, easy to drink. Not to much carbonation, ABV hides extremely well. Sips like a 11-12%.
O: This was a great experience! I tried some of the Jam the Radar last night and wanted to give this one a try today. I'm glad I bought it. It definitely reminds me of a holiday Christmas type of beer with all the spices and flavoring. Would recommend to try if you are into barrel aged stouts.

Apple stout, that’s the best way to describe this one. Creamy stout appearance. Scent is a fall festival-Apple, spices, and brown sugar play in the same yard as the barrel. Maybe they took turns jumping in and then marinated. Taste is what I’d think taking a piece of Thanksgiving day apple pie dipped in a barrel aged stout would taste like. A bit of a syrupy thickness that I think comes with a stout that’s barrel aged and adjunct forward. A very interesting beer, and if I have the chance, I’d share it with relatives on Thanksgiving next year, as I won’t be able to get any more this year.

2021 release. Poured from a 500mL bottle into a snifter.

Inky seal brown liquid with a faint tan collar. No lacing; faint legs.

Complex and intensely aromatic nose - the adjuncts are right up front, apple pie, caramel, and hazelnuts indeed. Some molasses, vanilla, coconut, fig, dates, and faint tobacco emerges from the barrel.

Sweet palate entry, with a long, chewy, evolving flavor profile. Baker's chocolate; torta di nocciole; treacle; rich caramelized apples in a dark baked crust; bourbon barrel notes; gentle, earthy bitterness...all leading to a refined medium-dry finish. Roast malt is present, but the base beer can't keep up with the additives.

Smooth, medium-bodied, not-quite-oily; well concealed ABV. Somewhat low carbonation arguably, but the body does seem to complement the flavors this way...

One of the more audacious experiments I've had, but I think it succeeds, even if the base stout is rather overwhelmed by the pie/nuts/etc. The barrel notes are restrained and really accentuate the other flavors.

Pours a deep black color with no head to it and very little lacing down the glass. Smells of deep roasted malt, huge notes of apple, cinnamon, caramel, and brown sugar. Tastes of sweet roasted malt, apple, cinnamon, caramel, and brown sugar. It's thick, but has a surprising amount of carbonation to it which makes it feel lighter than it is. Overall, another excellent one from Bottle Logic!

Stark black with a dense mocha foam of moderate height settling to a fine curled collar.

Welp, smell certainly is apple pie, if only mildly amplified by whiskey heat, which in turn gets further amped up by blooming, spicy cinnamon.

Taste is tangy and bright, sense-awakening yet heart warming mulled cider and even hot toddy, which then recedes to a lightly smoky roast and toasted pie crust exhale.

Feel is moderately full with a soft froth and a lightly sticky, semi-dry finish.

Although Not My Gumdrop Buttons! took my breath away two years ago, this is a helluva comforting alternative to the overly spiced pumpkin and holiday ales, and I hope it sees annual rotation.

Pitch black body with a brown swirling cap. Aromas of baking spices with caramel apple, bread dough, hazelnut with an earthy tone, and big bourbon backing. Taste has great connections with the baking spices with apples and hazelnut, but never all at once, in separate waves, apple first, hazelnut fainter second, bourbon heat is higher for BL stouts, finish finally hits the caramel with booze and hazelnut in a perfumey way. Feel is very warm with spices and general sweetness textures sitting atop a viscous malt body. Not a clean stout by any means, but adventurous and certainly tastes like fall. The wife liked it

Sweet caramel apple and chocolatey nutty bourbon barrel nose on this one! Taste follows with a well-balanced, chocolate and caramel covered apple and slightly boozy barrel finish. Good stuff and perfect for a Thanksgiving nightcap!
