In early 2019 we summoned Pennsylvania's Voodoo Brewery to Anaheim to compare and combine our unique barrel-aging techniques. Together we conjured a double mash imperial stout recipe built to withstand the curse of time in a set of extraordinary Heaven Hill bourbon barrels, where it stayed, buried alive for two full years.⁣

Somniphobia is a small-batch variant on our Deprecophobia base, finished through enough coffee to wake the dead. ⁣

The malevolent mortals at Mostra helped us source and delicately roast a hauntingly delicious blend of Panama Geisha coffee beans from the legendary Finca Lerida farm. This singular finishing ingredient layers a bold milk chocolate character with whispers of walnut and honeysuckle into the unmistakable flavors of the beer’s prominent raisin, cookie dough and tootsie roll-toned base. It's devilishly viscous at 13% ABV and richer than crushed velvet in a mahogany coffin.

500 ml bottle into a snifter. 2021 edition, had 3/19/22. Obtained as FOBAB 2021 to go purchase.

Pours near black and opaque, thick and oily looking, with no head or lacing. Aromas of coffee, chocolate, malt, vanilla, bourbon- more as it warms, marshmallow. The flavor is more bourbon oriented, then coffee, chocolate, malt, vanilla. Smooth, a little creamy, an excellent full body, appropriately carbonated.

This is straightforward and focused, but pretty incredible. The coffee, barrels and chocolate all stand out, especially in the flavor. Definitely one of my favorites by them.

Poured at fridge temp. Pours motor oil black (actually kind of looked like oil as it came out of the bottle). The nose is full of fudge, vanilla, bourbon, toffee, and a bit of coffee. That said, the coffee is very faint on the nose. Dominated by the huge bourbon and chocolate notes. That two years in the barrels is insane. Some milk starts to come through, along with a hint of cinnamon. Quite amazing. Can't wait to try it.

The taste is insanely good. The coffee decided to join the party on the taste. There is a perfect blending of coffee, chocolate, and bourbon. Vanilla, maple, bourbon-soaked raisins, some roasted malts. Nice dark fruits are there. This is so smooth and the flavors are just so nicely integrated.

The mouthfeel is 5/5 good. Thick and creamy. Sweet on the aftertaste, but not too sweet. Overall, a winner for me.

Pours like crude oil, glugging into the glass like you pulled the drain plug on an old tractor. A dark tan, dense yet scattered head emerges, coating the side of the glass like whipped topping. So far, so good.

You smell this as soon as it pours into the glass. Pungent aromas of rich coffee, raspberries, crème brûlée crust, and green peppers.

This beer is massive. At first, the coffee reveals itself with dominating green pepper flavors. As it opens up, the coffee becomes fruity, chocolatey and balanced. The malt bill hold its sweetness in check, and the barrel provides a ton of oaky vanilla and dark caramel. Finishes with a huge amount of dark chocolate bitterness to balance out the whole thing.

Drinks like you’re swallowing cement. Mouth coating, and rich. You taste this for several minutes after it’s gone. These double mash stouts are taking their barrel program to an entirely new level. This beer crushes.

Had on tap. Pitch black body with a thin brown head that has good retention however. Aromas of dark earthy coffee waltz beautifully with the barrel in the nose, dark chocolate, earth and molasses linger in support. Where I thought the smell was more perfect in this one compared to the base I thought the coffee took away the rich elegance of the barrel, still a grand ba coffee stout with the additions of leather, wood root, and fudge from the elements in then nose. Much like the rich barrel forward base beer, this stout has an elevated feel after waves of lush and rich darkness, coffee and barrel forward, though heat is slightly less, so melded into layers beautifully. Another great stout from BL

Well well well....I did not expect to enjoy this before we drank our Deprecophobia bottle, but here we are at FOBAB 2021 and it's still flowing despite the day being almost done and I can't believe it!

Appearance is a viscous raging black with burnt brown edges under a creamy dark mocha blanket that seems to retain thin but well, at least for a BA stout, and even at a festival.

The mocha marshmallow nose gives way on the palate to thick ribbons of charred oak and the darkest chocolates. Fucking delish. All kinds of dark, drying oak plays in fraught competition with the sweet decadence. I'm normally not a huge fan of Bottle Logic's coffee stouts, but they've got a perfect pairing here.

It's so nice, I'll have it twice.
