Bourbon Barrel-Aged Imperial Stout with Nuts + Coconut. A river of coconut curls through an inky black underworld guarded by a three-headed sentry of walnuts, almonds, and pistachios. This Bourbon Barrel-Aged Stout collaboration with Mortalis Brewing showcases the game-changing technique of roasting certain finishing adjuncts onsite. We house-roasted almonds, pistachios, English walnuts, and coconut and immediately applied them to this decadent stout base, capturing all of the rich, delicious nut + coconut oils into the finished liquid.

poured from a 500mL bottle into a TG DBA tumbler. pours thick black with almost two fingers of dark brown foam. bourbon, oak, mixed nuts and chocolate on the nose. all that plus coconut in the taste. not a ton of coconut but that’s ok as this is extremely well balanced and nuanced. i get equal amounts chocolate, coconut and mixed nuts. this all mixes wonderfully with the bourbon and oak. thick mouthfeel. this was downright incredible. after picking up almost no coconut on the nose i wasn’t surprised to not get coconut overload in the taste but the way the flavors and additives work together is near perfection. damn. long live the imperial nut stout.

Bottle pour - cap hissed on opening, provided a medium but quickly dissipating dark brown head. Nose is primarily barrel with spirit second and nuttiness third. Is there supposed to be a "coconut river" here? I can't detect any. Flavor is mostly barrel with underlying nutty notes and a pretty dry finish.

Pours black, no head to speak of. Aroma:bourbon , more bourbon & some nuts. Sweet, rich, decadent. Flavors: bourbon, brown sugar, caramel, vanilla, coconut & some nuts. The nutty flavor isn’t as pronounced as I expected. The flavors linger in the mouth a very long time & they are delicious. Very thick, almost syrupy, high carbonation isn’t needed with this much alcohol but there is very little burn. Overall: exceptional.

Poured at fridge temp. Pours a thick black with almost no head. The nose is super nutty, with walnuts totally dominating. Almonds, chocolate, and pistachios follow. Wow - really nice.
The taste is bourbon-soaked nuts. Vanilla, walnuts, almonds, toffee, chocolate, and figs. Lovely.
The mouthfeel is thick and creamy, with a super nutty finish. If you like nuts and chocolate, this is for you!

Absolutely one of the best beers I could possibly have to close out 2023.
This is insanely rich and decadent. Everything comes to play, but nothing oversteps its role. Walnut, almond, pistachio, and coconut all combine with the bourbon and the insanely thick (and sweet) malt base to provide a melange of dessert-like wonderfulness, including notes of chocolate, molasses, caramel, and vanilla. It's among the closest analogues to drinking liquid cake as I've had in a beer.
