Grandma's secret is out- strawberry and rhubarb make one heckuva combination. Her pies take that otherwise useless stalk and swirl in the summery taste of berry with copious sugar additions for balance and her pie is born. But without all that sweetness, or crustiness, or fiber- Woodland Empire's version captures the essence of the dessert in a thirst-quenching form.

Set'em Wild, Set'em Free (Rhubarb & Strawberry Ediiton) awakens the senses with its bright, spicy tang and a souring scent that nearly evokes mouth-watering behavior. A faintly hazed, light mauve gives the ale a white zinfindale appearance except for that soft cotton-white head that builds on top. Its sip delivers on those tangy, radiant and fruit fruit and vegetable flavors slathered in cider, wine and brisk citrus.

As the middle palate unfolds, the beer shows that its much more than just rhubarb and strawberry as complentary "lacto" flavors capture the essence of crabapple, white grape, lemon, lime and the delicate mustiness of the sea. Sour like dry wine, dry cider and a mulled citrus medley. As the sourness tightens and ultimately controls the beer's taste, its utmost acidity eventually overwhelms the beer's more delicate fruit influences.

Dry, crisp and highly refreshing, like that summertime pie, the ale fits in with hot weather and a thirsty palate. Stripping the thirst with ease, the beer's carbonic bite and piquant sourness is clean, crisp and refreshing throughout. With a flutter of wheat and fruit, the beer's brisk aftertaste echoes lightly of that traditional pie.

Dark pink in color hazy and inviting. Tart but not overwhelming. Taste is sour strawberries and that welcoming rhubarb flavor you'll recognize if your a fan. Hard not to chug this beer down. I need a six pack.

Draft at the brewpub and there are bottles poking their heads up at the better bottleshops in Boise... Pours sorta hazy pinkish... strawberry is more than prevalent with some rhubarb adding more tartness with just a touch of flavor... light lacto notes relies more on the fruit for the sour than the bugs... Very tasty in the heat.

On tap at Woodland Empire. Pours out a nice pinkish hue, like grapefruit juice, soft silky head. Nice grain aroma, the taste kicks in with some tart sweetness. Very refreshing on a 100 degree day. Tangy finish. Really nice!
