Draft at the brewery. Inky black, small crown of beige head. Big roast aroma, taste too. Spot on for the style. Nice traditional beer. They hit the nail on the head!

Pours black with deep brown highlights, a fluffy off-white heads sticks to the glass. Smells of burnt toast and caramelized sugar. Flavor follows with a good amount of roasted grain, toast, and coffee. Feel is wonderfully light and crisp, medium carbonation, balanced I with a touch of roasty bitterness and really captures the essence of a Schwarzbier. Overall, this is my favorite from Woodland Empire so far. Schwarzbier's are criminally unattempted and this one is great! Prost!

I had this beer on-tap in a nonic at the brewery. It was a limited release, and for this beer only you could get 1-liter pours -- I had enough drinking to do that day not to go for the 1L.

Appearance: dark brown with a clear body and a finger of frothy tan foam. I like my schwarzbiers just a little more schwarzy.

Smell: mostly yeasty and beery. Definitely a lager, but not much other character.

Taste: yeasty with a little roast and a bit of caramel. Not bad.

Mouthfeel: medium body with a decent carbonation and creaminess.

Overall: the aroma is a little underwhelming, but otherwise a nice schwarzbier.
