ownership changes, taproom closures, a revolving cast of brewers, the rebrand, the killing of old beers and the birth of new ones in recent months, its been hard to be a fan of these guys lately, and this new pils isnt doing them any favors on that front, its sweet and cheap tasting, lacking any real identifiable lager characteristics, and frankly there is nothing premium about it other than the branding, which looks clean and slick, but i have to confess, i had this at a bar that is famous for lousy draft maintenance and that could definitely be a factor here, so ill describe my experience and save harsher scoring for when i can have it elsewhere or from the can, but this was a rough go. yellow and without enough carbonation, but fairly clear. the nose and taste do not seem fresh, i pick up strange fruitiness almost like this is being poured through an old apricot wheat line or something, very off putting because it erodes any semblance of crispness that i look forward to in the style. its got a generic residual sugar at the end and all through it really, faintly floral but not hoppy in any traditional sense, and could benefit from some bitterness on the back end i reckon. its grainy and a simple but kind of watered down way, and there is a lack of any identifiable yeast character, i want to know im drinking lager with these and its not apparent in this pour. light in body but not appealing in volume, which defeats the purpose, and i just have to hope i got this on a bad day, a line pour from a sloppy establishment. ill grab a can as soon as i see one and try again, theres no way woodland has gotten this bad, is there?! update and revision coming soon i hope...
edit: well, it took about a year and a half, but im finally having this from a can, and its way way way way way way better, although i think there have been some beer changes too, this is being made at western collective now i think, theyre calling it a cascade pils, and its definitely cleaner and hoppier and more refined and professional than when i had it last, not even the same beer really other than the name, its tidy and bitter and refreshing and pretty great, so amending scores to better reflect its current form without entirely forgiving its past sins yet, say a 70/30 lean towards the new. the branding is sharp, but with the bavarian pattern it sort of looks like an oktoberfest from a distance. love how fresh and hoppy this is, the cascade is nice in here, very american type pils, leaning west coast but still with great balance. glad to see woodland coming around a little bit, its been rocky but this is great now, early fall 2025...

16oz can from Brewers Haven. Golden pour, huge foamy white head. Biscuity aroma, crackers. Taste is sweet, malty, bready with a fruity back end and mild bitterness.

16-ounce can purchased at ABV Public House in Hillsboro, OR. Date stamp reads "1126 CANNED 07/13/2023". Poured in a UK tulip-style half-pint glass.
Look:
Hazy yellow gold capped with a loose head of bright white foam that shrinks to a tenacious skin and a patchy collar. The foam leaves good lacing.
Smell:
Clean, slightly toasty Pilsner malt with an undercurrent of floral hops, a whiff of yeast, and a touch of sulfur.
Taste:
Opens with soft, doughy malt flavor. Good depth to the malt, nice and clean, not too sweet. The floral hop character which was delicate in the nose becomes more prominent on the breath through the middle. Delicious. Spicy noble hop flavors provide bite and a welcome counterpoint to the soft malt. The finish is malty with a bit of cereal character and a gentle but enduring bitterness.
Feel:
Medium-light-bodied with a smooth, round texture and lively carbonation. Finish is crisp and quenching.
Overall:
I've had a handful of beers from Woodland Empire over the years and they've all been solid at best. But I would happily drink this one again. While I do wish the flavors were a bit stronger overall, there's no question that Long Ride is a tasty, well-made Pilsner from a brewery I will try not to underestimate again.
