Canned on 9/13/17. CBF Tulip.

A: pours an opaque black that no light penetrates, except for glances of brown on the edges on account of the thinning of the base of this glass. Half finger of tan head, with tons of white sediment chunks and a little visible carbonation. Spotty lacing and fair to poor retention. The sediment looks gross.

S: the smoke is prominent but not overbearing on the nose. Smells like turkey jerky. Or smoked paprika; there is a sweet and spicy smokiness to this. Definitely a porter though, the smokiness is sweet but the beer itself does not smell very sweet.

T: thicker and sweeter than I expected. I agree with others that think this should be considered a stout. Arrives slightly sweet, smoke expresses itself immediately, then the malty sweetness. Thick, chewy, sweet. Molasses and a little sour dark fruit note and char at the very end before a slightly floral and medicinal hop. On the finish that floral hop note lingers more prominently than the smoke does. In fact, after the third or fourth sip, you almost don't taste the smoke at all.

M: too thick, chewy, slick, and low carbonation to be a proper porter. This should be a smoked stout. Motor oil texture. Love it as an "event" beer, not as a "party" beer.

O: this is only my second warped wing beer, and I like it a lot better than the last. A little off for the style, but fun and interesting nonetheless. Interesting to try, but I don't see myself buying this again.

12oz can, served in a shaker pint glass. Packaged 15:47:10 on 09/13/17.

Appearance: Pitch black - really in stout territory for the color of this beer. Thin tan head with some small strands of persistent lacing.

Smell: Barest amount of wood smoke, with a bit of roasted malt and stout aromas. To my surprise, it doesn't have a lot of smell at all.

Taste: Strong roasted malt - really comes across more like a stout than a porter. Smoke is just barely there, more at the finish as a long lingering char flavor. The smoke that they speak to on the label is more of an accent; it is not the focus of this beer.

Mouthfeel: Light carbonation, nicely thick, approaching creamy - very much to stout in character.

Overall/Drinkability: If I put aside that this beer is not really a porter and is more of a stout, and it really isn't a smoked beer, I can say it is a pleasantly bitter and roasty stout. It is not very sweet and definitely is not a dessert bomb like so many stouts these days. Mind you, sometimes I want a dessert-like stout, but sometimes I don't, and this fits the latter category nicely. I think this would go well with a wide range of roasted meals - either root vegetable or meat.

I really enjoyed this beer. The smokiness was the dominating feature of the beer but it's not overwhelming. Beer finished very smooth and really liked it.

It was about 9 months in the cellar when I had it, so it probably mellowed a bit. The smoke taste was prominent but was not overwhelming.

Thoroughly enjoyed form the growler in a snifter via Jungle Jim's. This FINE porter pours a muddy blackish brown with a moderate head of brown foam that subsides to a thin ring, light layer, and nice lacing. Nose of dark chocolate, light vanilla, moderate amounts of smoke, and deeply roasted malts. Flavors exceed the nose with bitter sweet dark chocolate and a touch of coffee on the front and sides that fades to a nice light smokey note on the middle to back with a touch of vanilla. Like a chocolate cake by the fire side. Coating medium bodied porter that has light carbonation and a subtle dry aftertaste. Very nice. The more I have from this brewery the more I like them...need to make a visit.

Cheers
