12.7oz bottle, served in a snifter. No date on the bottle. "Aged in Maple Bourbon Barrels" on the label. No ABV either, but I'm assuming this beer is the same as that listed here.
Appearance: Dark copper brown. Lots of sediment left behind in the bottle. Very little head upon pouring and it disappeared to nothing pretty quickly after pouring.
Smell: Bourbon, vanilla, a bit of oak.
Taste: Boozy, vanilla, toasted malt, lightly bitter finish, lots of bourbon.
Mouthfeel: Very light carbonation, good thickness, warming at the finish from the high ABV.
Overall / Drinkability: Mostly bourbon with a solid beer/malt backbone, but honestly, I can't tell that there is a doppelbock underneath this, nor am I getting any of the maple notes supposedly from the barrel. It's more like a different take on the "Whiskey Rebellion" Imperial Stout from the same brewer. It's tasty and enjoyable....but it's just not well executed in that the underlying Doppelbock is completely lost. A nice sipping and savoring beer to get the interesting and good bourbon barrel notes, but that's about it.
