Every spring when the weather starts to warm, brave and eager paddlers head out to break ice on the river. This light-bodied beer is very dry with a strong hop aroma and flavour with notes of pine, citrus and floral. This Brut IPA is just as mighty as the Ottawa River.

473 mL can from the LCBO; dated Mar 4 2019 and served slightly chilled.
Pours a cloudy golden-yellow colour, with one finger of soapy, foamy white head situated atop; excellent retention, holding together for at least ten minutes before it even begins to give up ground. A lumpy cap is left behind, with modest amounts of lace flung about in the process; looks fantastic, though I feel as if a 'brut IPA' should look more effervescent, and less hazy. As for the aroma, I'm getting lemon and white grapefruit, alongside hints of floral hops, pine needles, nectarine and gooseberry.
It's tasty, and well-balanced - downright mild-mannered for an IPA, really. I'm getting notes of stone fruit, melon and mango at the forefront, with hints of pear and orange also coming through amidst the brew's grainy, crackery pale malt backdrop. The flavour profile takes on more of a resiny, floral, earthy bitterness at the finish, but the aftertaste quickly turns dry. Medium in body, with moderate carbonation levels that gently agitate the palate; feels frothy and smooth on the tongue. Quite drinkable - even sessionable, if you enjoy the hop profile (which I rather did).
Final Grade: 3.85, a B+. I haven't had a lot of Brut IPAs, but Whitewater's Icebreaker strikes me as a pretty darn good one with some room for improvement. I still think the visuals are a bit off, and the texture isn't as light or spritzy as I'd prefer - but I totally dig the flavours, and having a few of these in a row would be no challenge whatsoever. Worth a try if you can find it - this 5 month old can tastes fine to me, but I'd love to see how this one tastes fresh.

Appearance - hazy, dark gold beer with some small floaties. Nearly two fingers of rocky white head. Great retention and spidery lacing at the edges of the glass.
Smell - not a huge nose, but a pineapple, grapefruit and lychee combo are the most distinguishable aromas.
Taste - a little bit of pineapple and lychee with strong earthy undertones. Bitterness is subtle until the end when it becomes a bitterness fest.
Mouthfeel - medium bodied, good expressive carbonation and medium-dry finish. Pretty close to spit on for the style.
Overall - first impression is deceiving as it looks fantastic, but the balance is a solid if unspectacular Brut IPA. Worth a try although a bit steep for what you get.
